Me personally, I have no preference. Off The Wall is my favourite MJ album, but when I rank them they're all scattered about throughout the years, there' no pattern at all. [Edited 11/29/05 9:05am] Thriller is a great album indeed (you are right about the brainwashing though); But Off The Wall is his best work, in my opinion...And for the record, the main reason why Thriller is considered his best work is because that four year period saw MJ dominate pop culture like no other artist; I wish some of the younger MJ fans were old enough to soak up that era; It was like three Beatlemanias rolled up into one..Dude was that huge... The man was an across the board God-like figure during that period...That's why that album is so revered..But, it's the same reason people say Sergeant Peppers is the Beatles best work and Purple Rain is Prince's best work...They are great, groundbreaking albums, but the real fans of these artists know the truth... Seriously though, that Thriller phenomenon was a US thing I reckon. Bad and Dangerous did almost just as well everywhere else. He barely stepped foot outside the USA during Thriller's run. I can only think of one or two instances of him appearing anywhere else, whereas he was travelling all around for later albums.
I know I'm a little too young to remember Thriller, but my older friends all say that Bad was bigger - and it was saleswise over here. Up in Liverpool apparently anyone who was into Pop music back in '88 went to that Aintree Racecourse gig. It was a huge event. I seem to remember reading that at the time it broke the record for the biggest solo concert event in history. [Edited 12/2/05 17:04pm]

[Edited 12/2/05 17:04pm] That may be true...But we all know that making it in the States is really what its all about for most music artists...It's the reason why people will always say to Robbie Williams, "You are great in the UK and the rest of Europe, but you haven't conquered the US yet, huh?' I love my overseas folks, but the reality is MJ's success in the US is what truely built his legend; What he did any where else only added on to that legend....Just ask Led Zep, The Beatles, The Stones, Elton John, The Bee Gees and any of the other international greats.... Ah, but with those artists can you think of anything they've done that was significantly more successful overseas than the States? At least to the extent that they were labelled as flops despite equalling or surpassing a predecessor's sales in most places
As far as Robbie Williams goes - I'm not a fan (Advertising Space has got to be the most dismally boring pile of crap I've heard for a long time), but it does irritate me when I see Americans online [not this forum] consistently say "Who?" just because he's not a big star over there. They come across his name all the time on the net and yet never look him up? They read about his massive EMI contract and his European concert attendances, but purposely pretend not to know who he is. There are a handful of massive US stars that if they went overseas couldn't get recognised if they walked down a street naked, but I know their names just from familiarity on the internet.

Great point...But me bringing up the Beatles and the rest of the lot was just an example of how "the prize" for most overseas acts (especially in the UK) is success in the US...They can be huge in the UK, Austraila, China, or anywhere else; But if you are a true music head you know making it in the US is the mountain top...Which is why MJ's success in the States really is unmatched in terms of full blown mania and importance...(Yeah, i know what he did in the UK, but come on...)For most artists, right or wrong, US acclaim is the true measure of all-around success...As for Robbie, I kinda like the guy...I recognize his celebrity and I even have "Feel" on my Ipod...He's a cool, funny cat.... I think it's just the money factor to be honest.
It's funny though. You've just got to breakout and be given a chance and it's tough to do on a large scale now. Bands like U2, Duran Duran, A-ha etc. got that through that big 80s invasion when it seemed like more European acts were making music videos, so MTV had no choice but to air them to fill up the playlists. There's just no format to take advantage of now and it's got to be done through vigorous promotional tours. Kylie once talked about getting tired of it - being a superstar back home, happy and wealthy but having to put up with people not even knowing how to pronounce her name in America and having to go through the mundane interviews etc. Robbie will never be sucessful over there though. He's far too arrogant and confident about his UK status to settle for trying to be accepted as anything else. I have no idea how Coldplay did it Or Dido

Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume 1 certified gold (500,000 units) (11/30/2005) 3. Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour (DVD) certified gold (50,000 units) (11/30/2005 ) 4. Number Ones (DVD) certified 4X platinum (400,000 units) (11/16/2005) 5. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" (digital single) certified gold (100,000 units) (11/8/2005) 6. "Billie Jean" (digital single) certified gold (100,000 units) (11/8/2005) 7. "Thriller" (digital single) certified gold (100,000 units) (11/8/2005) Note: Greatest Hits: HIStory Volume I should have also been certified platinum since the album has scanned over 850k in the USA. When you take into account retail and record club shipments, it's definitely shipped well over 1 million units in the USA. "Thriller" (digital single) has also scanned approximately 150k to date, therefore, a platinum certification should be due sometime next year. Thanks Yuichi!

As per Hanboo @ UKMix and hopespringseternal at the MJ Forum, Michael Jackson scanned 18,000 units in the USA for the week ending December 18th, 2005. This figure does not include any DVD titles like Number Ones, HIStory On Film: Volume 2, Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour, Greatest Hits: HIStory, etc. If it did, Michael's weekly SoundScan total would probably be around 25,000 units or higher. No Soundscan figures available at this time since it's the holidays. USA MJ SoundScan Update Neilsen SoundScan sales for the week ending December 25th, 2005. ...courtesy of hopespringseternal and Hanboo. Great news as MJ sold approximately 35,000 units (est.) last week. This figure handily beats Michael's best Soundscan week of 2005 which was back during the week ending June 19th, 2005 when he sold 27,166 units the week after his vindication in court. CD's: 25,300 (Sales figure confirmed) DVD's: 10,000 (Sales Estimate) Therefore, over the past two weeks, MJ shifted 60,000 (est.) in the USA. According to Musicweek, for the second year in a row, Michael Jackson had the most titles on the UK End Of Year 2004 Catalog Chart with the same three albums in the same order - Thriller improved 9-6, Off The Wall slipped 16-17 and Bad stumbled 22-47, with sales of 134,729, 91,675 and 56,209, respectively. 1979's Off The Wall was one of the oldest titles on the list.
