So, a nice site compilated all the stories regarding Madonna's #1 album. I didn't know it was that big of a deal. But can you imagine if Madonna took second place after Carrie, they'd be having a field day.

Billboard: Madonna Dances Straight To No. 1

November 23, 2005, 11:45 AM ET

Katie Hasty, N.Y.
For the sixth time in her career, Madonna finds herself with an album in the No. 1 position on The Billboard 200. Her latest, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" (Warner Bros.), sold nearly 350,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, to bow on top of the chart.

"Confessions" is Madonna's third album in a row to top the chart, with "Music" and "American Life" preceding it. The new disc's first single "Hung Up" works its way into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Carrie Underwood's debut album "Some Hearts" (Arista) also makes a big entry at No. 2 with nearly 315,000 copies. The fourth season "American Idol" winner previously reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "Inside Your Heaven" and has enjoyed crossover success with both pop and country listeners. "Some Hearts" also takes over the top slot on the Country Albums chart where hers is the first album from a contestant to become No. 1 on that tally.

In its second week, Kenny Chesney's "The Road and the Radio" (BNA) falls 1-3, on sales of 191,000 copies, down 59% from its debut week. Reissued last week in a "platinum edition," Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island) rebounds 15-4 on a 341% increase to sales of 185,000 copies and is the chart's greatest sales gainer.

Madonna's new album rules pop charts
Reuters via Yahoo! News - Nov 23 2:42 PM

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Venerable pop icon Madonna danced to the top of the U.S. pop album charts for the sixth time in her career on Wednesday with her third consecutive No. 1 release, "Confessions on a Dance Floor."

Her Warner Bros. disc sold nearly 350,000 copies in the week ended November 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and ranks as her third-largest sales week in the tracking firm's 14-year history.

The album and its single "Hung Up" also are No. 1 on the respective British charts. The single is in the top-10 of the U.S. charts.

First-week U.S. sales for "Confessions" fell far short of those for Madonna's 2000 album "Music," which opened at No. 1 with 420,000 copies, but handily eclipsed those of her most recent previous release, "American Life," which started off with 241,000 copies in 2003 and quickly fizzled, logging sales to date of just 661,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Her best-selling album in recent years is the Grammy-winning "Ray of Light," which opened at No. 2 with 371,000 copies in 1998, behind the unsinkable "Titanic" soundtrack, and went on to sell 3.8 million copies

Last week's chart champion, country star Kenny Chesney's "The Road and the Radio," fell two places to No. 3 with 191,000 copies sold. In between, was the debut release from "American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood, "Some Hearts," which opened with nearly 315,000 copies sold and also topped the country charts

Madonna's Confessions Take Her To The Top
FMQB - Nov 23 2:40 PM

To no one's surprise, Madonna's newest studio album Confessions On A Dance Floor tops the SoundScan sales chart this week, moving 350,000 copies in its first week on the shelves. Confessions is her third straight #1 debut, after 2003's American Life and 2000's Music. Coming in right behind the Material-turned-Kabbala Girl was American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album, Some Hearts. Kenny Chesney's The Road And The Radio dropped to third place this week, and the expanded "Ultra Platinum Edition" of Mariah Carey's smash hit, The Emancipation Of Mimi, pushed the album to number four. Coming in fifth was the latest Now That's What I Call Music compilation

Madonna hits triple double!
23 Nov 2005
Madonna achieves record-breaking chart success

Madonna's latest feat of getting the top spot on both the UK singles charts and Album charts is nothing new as she has done it before! And not just once. In fact Madge has achieved the double twice before.

Her current #1 single is "Hung Up" and her latest album "Confessions On A Dance Floor" are both number one this week. Prior to that it was "Like A Prayer" at the top of the singles charts and "Like A Prayer" at #1 on the album charts. That was in April 1989. Before that it was the wonderful "Papa Don't Preach" and the album "True Blue" in July 1986.

Her first #1 was twenty years ago when 'Into The Groove' hit the top of the UK singles charts. Madonna's achievement makes her the first female artist to achieve the chart double of simultaneous No.1s in the Singles and Albums charts three times.

At 47 years old Madonna's achievement illustrates her longevity and her continued ability to reinvent herself.

According to The Book of British Hit Singles & Albums, Madonna's 1654 weeks on chart makes her the Most Successful Female Act Of All Time.

The Official Press Release:

Madonna Dances to Number One: "Confessions On A Dance Floor" Tops Charts Internationally

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/23/2005 -- Madonna has set the world dancing with the release of her phenomenal new Warner Bros. Records album, "Confessions On A Dance Floor," featuring the smash global hit, "Hung Up."

A bravura return to the iconic superstar's dance music roots, "Confessions On A Dance Floor" has swept the planet since its release on November 15th, debuting at Number One on Billboard Top 200 charts and repeating the feat in a staggering 24 other countries from Japan, Portugal, Spain and Australia to France, Germany, Sweden, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the single "Hung Up" is setting charts everywhere ablaze, rocketing to the top spot in eight countries and ruling American dance charts for four weeks in a row. In the process it has joined the ranks of thirty-five number one dance singles from an artist who has single-handedly defined the genre across nearly two decades.

The MTV Networks (including MTV, VH1 and Logo) have been a huge part of the success of Madonna's new album. The "Hung Up" video, which reached number one on MTV's TRL for five consecutive days, while remaining in heavy rotation on both MTV (The Big 10) and VH1 (Gung Ho), further enhances Madonna's reputation as the premier video pioneer of our time.

It's a reputation spreading into digital realms as well, with three different configurations of "Confessions On A Dance Floor" currently holding three out of four top downloads spots on the iTunes Music store, while "Hung Up" is lodged at number one on iTunes overall singles chart. Altogether, the iTunes Music store sales represents nearly 10% of Madonna's overall CD sales. As a ringtone "Hung Up" is likewise making history since debuting a full month before its radio release, prompting millions of downloads across the world.

Racking up sales of over 350,000 units in the U.S. alone, "Confessions On A Dance Floor," joins Madonna's two previous albums, "Music" and "American Life," as her third straight number one debut. With a sound that evokes and embellishes all the excitement, energy and innovation that first set Madonna apart as dance music's all-time most original innovator, "Confessions On A Dance Floor," co-produced and co-written by Madonna and DJ wizard Stuart Price, is just the latest triumph from this incandescent superstar. Packing stadiums worldwide with her astonishing stage spectacles, Madonna has made music history with international sales of over 200 million albums. Her enormous influence has spanned six chart-topping albums and 46 Top 40 singles.

It's hardly surprising that fans around the world have taken the album to heart as a declaration of musical independence and identity. "Madonna has transformed herself so many times," observed Stephanie Rosenbloom in The New York Times, "that nearly every fan has seen a glimmer of herself, or himself, reflected in her at some point...To see even a part of yourself embraced by her, especially a part that you feel is marginalized, can be a heady validation."

With "Confessions On A Dance Floor" Madonna has offered glorious validation to our immemorial impulse to "dance for inspiration."

Madonna Dances to the Top

Material Girl holds off American Idol with "Confessions on a Dance Floor"

Madonna danced her way to the top this week, selling 350,000 copies of her club-ready album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Material Girl is no stranger to big debuts -- her last two albums, American Life and Music also opened at Number One -- but with Confessions, Madonna is enjoying a bit of an upswing. Not only have reviews been positive, but sales have also spiked: Compare this week's big debut with the 241,000 copies of American Life sold its first week in 2003.

Another strong contender, the latest American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, debuted at Number Two, selling 315,000 copies of her debut album, Some Hearts, and continuing the TV show's track record as a star-maker. Meanwhile, country sensation Kenny Chesney's album The Road and the Radio, last week's Number One, slid down to Three, selling 191,000 more copies this week, an impressive second-week tally.

Four new tracks have helped Mariah Carey sell 185,000 more copies of The Emancipation of Mimi. Her album moved up eleven slots to Number Four from Number Fifteen after Carey re-released it last week with the bonus material. And the twentieth edition of the ever-popular compilation Now That's What I Call Music! rounds out the Top Five at Number Five, moving 169,000 more copies.

While this week boasts strong debuts, there were also several casualties. Rap superstar 50 Cent tumbled from Number Two to Number Six with the soundtrack to his film Get Rich or Die Tryin' in only its second week on the charts. Selling 169,000 copies, the soundtrack still pales in comparison to his impressive sales record for his last studio album, which sold 1.1 million copies in five days. Also falling, guitar hero Santana dropped from Number Eight to Number Seventeen this week, and Destiny's Child said farewell to Number Nine, falling to Number Twenty-two.

Other strong debuts come from country duo Big and Rich, whose Comin' to Your City launched at Number Seven, selling 157,000 CDs. Green Day's live album Bullet in a Bible bowed at Number Eight. Further down the charts, Bruce Springsteen hit Number Eighteen with his thirtieth anniversary reissue of Born to Run. And rapper Pitbull's remix collection Money is Still a Major Issue sold 45,000 copies, landing at Number Twenty-five.

Next week, count on a beefy debut for rabble-rousing rockers System of a Down and their album, Hypnotize, the second album of the year for the band. Let's see if Madonna has what it takes to party with these guys. And John Mayer's live album may also shake things up a bit.

This week's Top Ten: Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor; Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts; Kenny Chesney's The Road and the Radio; Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi; Now That's What I Call Music! Volume 20; Music From and Inspired by Get Rich or Die Tryin'; Big and Rich's Comin' to Your City; Green Day's Bullet in a Bible; Nickelback's All the Right Reasons; Martina McBride's Timeless.

Madonna tops charts for 6th time

By Robert Hilburn , Times Staff Writer
Times Staff Writer

November 24, 2005

Madonna's return to the dance floor vaulted the veteran pop strategist to the top of the nation's album sales chart Wednesday for the sixth time in her colorful career.

The singer's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" sold 350,000 copies in its first week in stores, outpacing the debut by "American Idol's" Carrie Underwood.

The latter's countrified pop album "Some Hearts" sold 315,000 in its first week to finish at No. 2, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The impressive showing proves that "Idol" is still a potent calling card in pop.

Madonna's sales represented a strong commercial recovery after the lukewarm sales of her last album, 2003's thoughtful but sonically spare "American Girl." That CD sold a respectable 241,000 copies in its first week but ended up selling fewer than 700,000 copies, a career low.

The only other new releases to enter the Top 20 this week were country duo Big & Rich's "Comin' to Your City," which finished No. 7 with sales of 157,000 copies; Green Day's live "Bullet in a Bible," No. 8 with sales of 92,000; Ginuwine's "Back II Da Basics," No. 12, with sales of 74,000; and Bruce Springsteen's deluxe "Born to Run" anniversary set, No. 18, with 53,000.

Thanks to an upgraded edition of the album, Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" leaped 11 places to No. 4. Last week's sales of 185,000 pushes the total to 3.9 million.

Kenny Chesney's "The Road and the Radio," which entered the chart at No. 1 last week, fell to No. 3 as sales dropped from 469,000 to 191,000

Madonna's Confessions Floors Carrie And Carey For Billboard #1
MTV Asia
November 24, 2005

It's not all that surprising that Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor — the Material Mom's first collection of fresh music in more than two years — opens atop the next Billboard albums chart, but it is something of a symbolic conquest. A top player in the game for more than two decades, Madonna has secured a spot among the most resilient pop-culture icons. But icon or not, bubbly "American Idol" victor Carrie Underwood and sultry diva Mariah Carey weren't about to just step aside and hand Madonna the Billboard championship belt. She was going to have to earn the win.

While Underwood came close, the latest "Idol" winner simply couldn't take the heat as Madonna scores her third-straight #1 debut (2000's Music took the top spot with close to 420,000 scans, while 2003's American Life finished at #1 with 240,000 plus). According to the latest SoundScan figures, Confessions sold close to 350,000 copies during its first week on record-store shelves, besting Underwood's debut, Some Hearts, by about 35,000 albums. Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi - Ultra Platinum Edition boosted the disc to #4 with 185,000 copies sold, right behind last week's #1, Kenny Chesney's The Road and the Radio, which slips to third with 191,000 plus scans.

Chicks in tune

Red states vs. blue states. Middle American intellectual chastity vs. cosmopolitan irony. The mythic battle for the hearts and minds of America goes on even in the music world, where country princess Carrie Underwood and the Great Mother of pop, Madonna, are vying to top the charts.

The farm-raised Underwood, whose American Idol success has inspired heartland girls to trade in their Malibu Barbies for the American Idol Barbie, is in second place on the charts with Some Hearts, which sold more than 314,000 copies in its first week.

But Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor has debuted at No. 1, right ahead of Hearts.

New Madonna album tops US charts

Madonna has achieved her sixth number one in the US pop album charts with new release Confessions on a Dance Floor.

Data from Nielsen SoundScan showed the album sold almost 350,000 in the week ending 20 November - her third consecutive US album chart topper.

The first-week sales fell short of Madonna's 2000 album Music, but were more than 100,000 higher than those of her previous release American Life.

Confessions and its single Hung Up are currently number one in the UK charts.

The album, which sees Madonna return to her disco music roots, has earned the singer some of the best reviews of her 22-year career.

Some Hearts, the first album from Carrie Underwood, the winner of the TV talent show American Idol, was a new entry at number two in the US charts, with sales of nearly 315,000.

According to recent figures from trade publication Billboard, overall US album sales this year are running about 14% lower than 2004.

Madonna 'Floors' competition

By Edna Gundersen and Ken Barnes, USA TODAY

Madonna has boogied her way to the top of the charts again, as her Confessions on a Dance Floor album sold 350,000 copies last week to become No. 1 on Billboard. That figure is 45% higher than the first-week total for her last album, American Life, which sold 241,000 in April 2003. Confessions is Madonna's sixth No. 1 album.

2005 American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's Some Hearts enters at No. 2 and sold 316,000 copies, the highest figure for a new country artist since Nielsen SoundScan began sales tabulations in 1991.

Last week's No. 1, Kenny Chesney's The Road and the Radio, dropped from 469,000 to 191,000 copies sold, for No. 3. A repackaged, enhanced version of Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi sold 185,000 and jumped from No. 15 to No. 4.

The rest of the top 10 consists of Now 20; the Get Rich or Die Tryin' soundtrack; the debuts of Big & Rich's Comin' to Your City and Green Day's live CD/DVD, Bullet in a Bible; Nickelback and Martina McBride

Madonna's "Confessions" Gobbled Up

By David Jenison - E! Online

As is her wont, Madonna will be stuffing plenty of stockings this holiday season.

The Material Girl scored her third consecutive chart-topper with Confessions on a Dancefloor, selling 350,000 copies in the U.S. for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures.

Thanks to a worldwide marketing blitz backed by MTV, the disc opened at number one in 25 countries, including the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Australia and--despite protests over her invocation of a rabbi in the Kabbalah-inspired track "Isaac"-- Israel. All told, Confessions moved 4 million copies worldwide, per Warner Bros. Records.

The 47-year-old superstar's previous album, American Life, topped the charts in '03 with a substantially fewer 241,000 copies, and the disc became her first not to yield any Top 10 radio hits. Consequently, Madonna went back to her dance pop roots with Confessions and landed another huge radio hit with the ABBA-sampling "Hung Up," which also topped the singles chart this week.

The current Rolling Stone cover girl, who has already sold more than 250 million career copies, now has three straight number one albums for the second time in her career. Before 2000's Music kicked off the second set of number ones, she had gone 11 years--the entire '90s--without hitting the top spot.

Confessions is also part of a larger streak. Madonna's debut marks the 10th consecutive different album to open at number one on the Billboard 200 in as many weeks, a run that began back in September with Paul Wall's The People's Champ. It beats the previous mark of nine straight weeks of number ones in 2003, of which American Life was a part.

With Madge on top, American Idol babe Carrie Underwood had to settle for the undercard. Her debut disc, Some Hearts, sold 315,000 copies at number two, making her the second straight Idol champ to miss the top spot.

Madonna rules world!

(Friday November 25, 2005 11:42 AM)

Madonna has landed at Number One in 25 different countries with her new album "Confessions On A Dancefloor", according to reports.

The staggering success of the record has seen 3.5 million copies sold across the globe, with American pop fans alone buying almost 400,000.

"Confessions On A Dance Floor" is currently topping the charts in the US, Canada, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Australia, France, Germany, Sweden and Italy.

The LP pushes album sales in her career over the 200 million figure, marking a significant improvement on the success of 2003's "American Life", which is her only album to sell under a million copies in the USA.

"Confessions On A Dancefloor" is currently Number One in the UK album charts, while "Hung Up", the first single, is also at the top of the charts.

Totally different animal...Prince and Revolution was just Prince...Different from MJ and the Jackson's...MJ's solo shit cannot be counted with the stuff he did with the Jackson's in terms of hits...The Revolution was Prince's touring band, although P allowed Wendy and Lisa to stretch out a little bit on the Parade album...But whether he was billed as Prince & The Revolution or The Artist, it's still Prince, the solo artist...

Well, it depends who you're talkin to/ Fred Bronson and Paul Grein usually counts MJ's hits with those he recorded with the Jacksons: First, he was the lead singer in every hits, plus he'spartially credited under the name Jackson.
They count Wham's hits to George Michael and Mc Cartney's with Wings.
Anyway, Michael's charted 41 Top 10 billboard Hot 100 singles and 59 Billboard's R&B Top 10 Hits.

Interesting point...But, George Michael wrote most of those songs while he was in Wham...McCartney wrote all of those songs when he headed Wings...For MJ it's different...There were times he wrote songs (Triumph and Victory albums), but he mostly collaborated with his brothers and/or performed songs written by outside writers and producers...That's why when people speak of MJ they don't include his work with the Jacksons alongside his solo output....

Crazy For You and Justify My Love ARE Madonna classics. They're two of her most loved songs. I agree the video for JML may have helped due to its controversial nature, but it was still a fucking excellent song, a cross over song for her in many ways. It appealed to a whole new set of people who'd probably never taken much notice of Maddy before.

Also, while I prefer Secret, I do think Take A Bow was the most commercial sounding track madonna had done at that point since Vogue.

Most of Her Ballads do really well. Crazy FOr you, Live to Tell (her first 2 number ones), Take a Bow, Rain..Wait where the Hell is Rain? I thought that song was huge?

Anyhoo...her ballads do really well..rolleyes for some reason.

Sorry missed most of this debate because I'm in Kansas City Visiting my Family for Thanksgiving. I'll be back in San Diego on Sunday.

Who's that Girl did have a video. She had short brown hair and featured Christerpher Lamb the boy that went on tour with her for the tour, but he is not the same kid from the Open Your Heart Video. He couldn't get a work visa to work outside of the US and so didn't tour.

Causing A Commotion did not have an offical video, but if you remember the opening Animated Sequence for the Who's That Girl movie wa Causing A Commotion. It receieved some airplay on MTV, but no alot.

There is not an offical Video for Crazy for You, but Geffen Records out out a video using clips from Vision Quest. Angel nor it's B-side Into the Groove, which really drove the single to the top 10, had a video. Hanky Panky has no offical video, though some versions of the VHS Truth or Dare have a performance clip. Keep it Together didn't get a video, and it's orignal b-side Vogue was tapped as a single and put on I'm Breathless. Rescue Me also did not get a video because it was riding on the press from Justify My Love.

All of the Prince's hits are accounted as solo hits because the recording contract was with Prince. not the revoultion. whereas the beatles contract, wings contract and the J5 contracts were with all the members of the group. hince the difference between solo and group hits.

Also piror i think to 99 when the charts were reconfigured sales counted for most chart points. as it should be changed back to. anyway that's all i know for now and time to get back to the exciment that is my family. hope everyone in the US had a great Turkey Day.

put the wrong movie title in for Vision Quest.

Like A Virgin was her first #1 in the States... Into the Groove was her first #1 in the UK.

An update.

Loving the album much more with each listen. Get together will NOT GET OUT OF MY HEAD! But that not a bad thing razz

Favorites right now...
Get together
Forbidden Love
How High

Does anyone know what songs are slated for release? And what happened to all the bonus trax? Super Pop is it? This album could benefit from a remix album. Too bad she blew that wad on the last one.

Fighting Spirits is the bonus track on the Limited Edition CD.

From what I've heard the singles that have been chosen are:

Hung Up
Sorry
Jump
Get Together

in that order. Apparently they want to release 5 but haven't decided on a 5th yet. I'm in total agreement with them so far.

And a remix album could still work. She had that little EP from the last album and had a remix album planned that never came out. She could still do it for this one, and I imagine it would do much better. It'd be hot if there were some new versions of older songs too.

in all fairness, she did have more time, no?

True. But aren't the charts stiffer competition since she's been around?

Not only that but back in Elvis's day album and single releases happened much more frequently than they do today.

Angel nor it's B-side Into the Groove, which really drove the single to the top 10, had a video.

Wait... I recall a video for Into The Groove that featured snippets from Desperately Seeking Susan... or am I lost in a brain fog?

you are correct. wink they also used to play the performance of "Into The Groove" from her 'Who's That Girl?' tour when the album "You Can Dance" was released.
