Z Cult Favorite/Bootsy-Excon (of Love)

I ran a thread on here sometime back regarding Bootsy's "Munchies For Your Love vs. "I'd Rather Be With You". That was fun cuz ya'll were divided on this something serious. I didn't mention "Excon (of Love)" cuz I didn't think many on here were truly hip to it. But I gotta go with it now, cuz babies, this song is KILLIN'! Off of Bootsy's 82 album "The One Giveth, The Count Taketh Away", this song is so underrated, it's criminal. From the intro to the fade, this is Bootsy at his best. It's raw but at the same time, it's polished. He has that almost out of tune guitar intro that works anyway. And of course, Bootsy's bassline is in Mutron heaven. Bootsy used the envelope filter like Hendrix used the wah-wah. And speaking of Jimi, "Excon (of Love)", like Bootsy's best ballads, are basically tributes to Hendrix, especially Bootsy's vocals. He captures Hendrix's spaciness better than anyone else since Jimi. I don't know, I just love this song to death. Who else digs "Excon (of Love)"?

I love this jam. Very underrated. It's funny because I always thought Jimi's spirit was somehow transcended into Bootsy's vocals(lol). Even Rick James made that comment about ol' Boots. Jimi definetly did rub off on him (clothes, hair, bass effects, coolness).Good pick as always B!

This whole album is underrated, right along with "Ultra Wave". It's like these two albums were totally forgotten about. Bootsy hit sooo hard with cuts from his earlier albums, largely cuz P-Funk was ruling the galaxy in the late 70's. I know the vibe changed in the ealy 80's, and "Ultra" and "The Count" soundwise kept up, but the sensiblity of the material was still somewhat "Roto-roterish". Plus Bootsy's image, especially on "The Count" kinda dated him. U had to be a hardcore funkster (like I was) to dig it and more than that, understand it.

Speaking of Ultra Wave....what did you think about Sound Crack?? Man that is some deep funk! Bootsy was on to another vibe or futuristic music.

I agree the One Giveth was definitely slept on.
