Otis Redding In Person at the Whiskey A Go Go Appreciation Thread In my recent quest to expand my live album collection, I've stumbled upon this little masterpiece. Man, did this guy put on one of the most energizing performances ever or what. It gave me a new respect for the MGs as well...until I found out it wasn't the MGs at all but Otis' own personal touring band. Man, even James Brown would have trouble putting together an outfit as manic yet tight as these guys. This live version of Respect blows Aretha's and his own studio version completely out of the water, and his version's of satisfaction and papa's got a brand new bag are at least equal to the originals. Too bad Otis died so young, it's amazing how prolific he was even after he died

Definitely one of the greatest live albums ever. If you like that seek out a cd called "Good To Me", which is another cd of recordings from Otis' Whiskey shows. Amazing that these weren't deemed releasable when originally recorded due to the off key trumpet player! The performances more than make up for it.
No Sonny T?

i dig Otis I can just imagine the set at the Whiskey A Go-Go. i remember renting the Monterey Pop Festival show on vhs years-a-go. and that was on fire and a short while after that show he and members of the Bar-kays were gone. | |
