Police search for Gary Glitter in Vietnam
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Authorities said Thursday they are searching for former British rock star Gary Glitter over his alleged relationship with a Vietnamese teenager.

In 1999, Gary Glitter was convicted in Britain of possessing child pornography.
By Barry Batchelor, AFP/Getty Images

"At present, relevant authorities Ba Ria Vung Tau province are trying to trace this gentleman, and clarify the relationship between this gentleman and a Vietnamese juvenile," Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said.

The 61-year-old Glitter, who rose to fame with a glam rock act in the 1970s, is perhaps most known for Rock and Roll (Part 2), which is still frequently played at sporting events.

Dung said authorities have conducted interviews with a 15-year-old girl who they found in the home rented by Glitter. The spokesman said Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, had applied for permanent resident status in Vietnam.

"If evidence of a (legal) violation is found against Mr. Paul Francis, and especially evidence of sexual child abuse, I believe that very strict legal measures will apply to him," he said.

In Vietnam, the crime of sexually abusing a child can lead to the death penalty.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail sentence before being released. He remains on Britain's sex offenders register.

He later went to Cambodia and was permanently expelled in 2002, though Cambodian officials did not specify his crime or file charges.

Glitter's other 1970s hit songs include I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am) and Do You Wanna Touch.

This might dispell some of the ignorance currently circulating around various places that somehow a lot of Eastern countries condone child abuse. It's quite the opposite.

Maybe they don't know. Over here we've pretty much cut him out of pop culture completely. I remember Channel 4 doing a list to the Top 100 most successful singles artists ever. He came somewhere in the 60s and they just quickly skimmed over him without anyone giving a comment. I have no idea why he only served 2 months in jail. He had hundreds of illegal images on his computer.

I never understood pedophilia and thank goodness for that. If it's little people you want, the world is covered with midgets everywhere. There are millions of little women who would love his attention. But this guys wants children. Where's Kervorkian when you need him?

I've actually seen the diocumentary you're talking about. It came on telly around 5 years ago? This guy definitely has some issues. I don't know whether death is right but maybe counseling and more jail time??

These people are kind of sad. They can't have proper (adult) relationships and they will never see children as most people do, only in a perverse way. They are kind of missing out on lifes best pleasures, love and having children.

i just wished they played him still. At least USA does. I dont think he even wrote those songs? My dad has some tv footage of him somewhere. Very, very glam. If anything, he killed the travesty that was glam rock by being so err... glam.

I can see your point. There's so much hypocrisy behind these comments - grown men hit on underaged girls all the time, and even many parents approve of their relationships. A large percentage of "women" at clubs have entered either with fake IDs or the personnel just let them in any way (you know it happens all the time). And everybody knows they're not letting the girls in, because "younger girls should be allowed to dance to the hippest beats too!". No, they are there to attract alcohol-buying male customers. That's how the whole system works. There are loads of 15/16-year-old girls at almost every trendy disco.

If I was hold criminally responsible for looking at sexually attractive females on the street (what's the difference between looking and touching, as both still presuppose a pure sexual aspect to it), who just happen to be under 18 and I'd have no way of knowing it unless I'd ask them each time "can I look at you, or are you underaged?", I'd be sent to death row each day.

i thought someone said the kid had to be 12 or under for the adult to be labeled a peadophile, someone in thesexofits thread in politics section said that. so wouldnt that mean garys not a peadophile? so wouldnt it be statutory rape, not peadophilia? and why was mj charged with child abuse as the boy was 13? is molesting a teen considered child abuse in the court of law? (not that i think michael is a child abuser, just wondering about the charges)

Gary Glitter denies child-sex allegation
VUNG TAU, Vietnam (AP) — Former British rocker Gary Glitter, who remains in Vietnamese custody, has denied allegations that he engaged in sex with two girls, including a minor, police officials said Tuesday.

Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was stopped by immigration officials as he was trying to flee Vietnam for Bangkok.
By Tuoi Tre, AFP/Getty Images

"In the questioning session Monday, he denied that he committed lewd acts with the girls," said a police officer from Ba Ria-Vung Tau province on condition of anonymity.

Glitter, who rose to fame as a glam rocker in the 1970s, is perhaps best known for Do You Wanna Touch and Rock and Roll (Part 2), which is still frequently played at sporting events.

Authorities decided to extend Glitter's detention at a prison outside Vung Tau by another three days so they could continue their investigation. Glitter has not been charged with any crime.

A day earlier, police said two girls, ages 12 and 18, claimed in interviews that they had sex with Glitter at his home in this seaside resort town. There were conflicting media reports that the second girl had not yet turned 18, the age of consent in Vietnam. The girls' accusations are currently being investigated, police said.

Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, had been stopped by immigration officials at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City over the weekend as he was trying to flee the country for Bangkok. He was later turned over to provincial police in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau, police and immigration officials said.

Police had been searching for Glitter since he fled his rented home in Vung Tau on Nov. 12 amid allegations that he committed lewd acts with a minor.

Under Vietnamese law, sexual contact with a minor under the age of 18 carries varying penalties, depending on the charge. Child rape carries the maximum penalty of death before a firing squad.

If Glitter is charged and convicted of sex with a 12-year-old, regardless of whether he had her consent, that would still be considered child rape under Vietnamese law, Vietnamese police have said.

The case has been highly publicized in state-controlled media, which had reported that Glitter was seen in Vung Tau with several teenage girls, whom he invited to his home, since moving to the area in March.

Tuesday's Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper quoted Glitter telling police that he had been duped by the girls. "When we met, they all said they were over 20 years of age," Glitter was quoted as saying.

On Monday, the paper had reported that the two girls said they had been paid for sex with Glitter. The 12-year-old told police she had sex three times with Glitter, who paid her 150,000 dong ($10) each time, the paper said. Police have refused to confirm whether either of the youths claimed they were paid for sex.

Neighbors on Monday said they were surprised to read the allegations against Glitter in the newspaper. They said the only problem they ever had with him was that he sometimes brought home friends to his oceanside villa and sang songs too loudly.

"Before this, I never suspected him" of doing anything he's accused of, said Tran Cong Khanh, 48. "I thought he just liked children."

Khanh said Glitter had been living in the house for about a year. In recent months, two girls who appeared to be in their mid-teens visited frequently and were often heard laughing or talking loudly at Glitter's swimming pool, Khanh said.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month jail sentence before being released. He later went to Cambodia and was permanently expelled in 2002, though Cambodian officials did not specify his crime or file charges.

Because most people see same-sex crimes, even alledged, ultimately unproven ones, as infinitely more horrifying than opposite-sex ones. Just contrast the public's reaction to R. Kelly vs. the public reaction to MJ.

Do you really not know the difference? I don't want to see anyone else on this board flipping out about people defending R Kelly because of a lot of you seem to be feeling sorry for this perverted freak who should have been locked up for the life the first time he got caught.
