Who LIKED THE DEAD KENNEDYs, MARTHA AND THE MUFFINS, ODW, PYLON, B-52's , REVILLOS, WALLOF VOODOO AND OTHER 80's PUNK?

There SEEMs to always be a CULT FOLLOWING amongst COLLEGE RADIO STATIONS with OLD PUNK.... Do you remember THE BUSH TETRAS TOO MANY CREEPS and JAPAN and X-Ray SPECS and THE PLASTICS, and BLOTTO....I WANNA BE A LIFEGUARD? In the 80's you could get these 7" vinyl's in NYC at 99 records and there also was a GROUP 999. Nowadays my local record store isn't even selling cd singles anymore. Remember PRINCE'S EARLY 7" and ya just WANTED to HEAR the B-SIDE so BAD and see the poster/calender stuff? How can ANYONE SELL THEIR COLLECTION?

Zelaira, I love your music threads, you've got good taste! When I read the names of the groups you listed, I immediately thought of this movie:

Great classic movie documenting the current Punk/New Wave scene at the time (1979/1980)

Devo,Klaus Nomi, the Go Gos,Gary Numan,999,Echo & the Bunnymen,Dead Kenedys, & the Cramps were just some of the groups in this movie.

Klaus Nomi

DEVO

Cramps

Probably because of legal issues with getting all the groups involved consenting to it's release, it probably won't be rereleased on DVD anytime soon sad .Bootleg copies will have to do.Another doc movie that's MIA is the L.A. Punk documentary, Decline of Western Civilization

i know i have this mouldering away on VHS in a box of junk somewhere. i used to watch this all the time. darby crash was a trip in it, talking about how he and his girlfriend beat up a housepainter because "we don't like painters". nuts

and fear and early phranc and x and all kinds of good stuff...i'd love a copy on dvd!

god, what kind of punk stuff was i into in the '80s...DKs, definitely...ramones...dead milkmen, tragic mulatto, butthole surfers, a bit of crass...i liked the arty stuff, but i was more goth than punk at the time...kinda had my fingers in all the cool subcultures, though. i picked and choosed what i liked in music and styles and philosophies and scenes.

i own christianne f. on dvd! i have it mainly for the scene where bowie is singing 'station to station' in that james dean costume...SO sexy. i saw the ziggy stardust concert movie at two boots cinema on avenue a, and i'm sure i've seen some other old punk movies at cinema village and the quad. i loved all those skanky little arthouse village movie theaters, i wish i could have packed them up and moved them to chicago with me...i have century landmark cinema and the music box here, but it's not quite the same. almost, but not quite.

Zelaira, have you seen Downtown 81? A little artfilm about the downtown/NY No Wave scene & it featured Mudd Club bands like DNA, the Plastics, Tuxedomoon, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, and James White & The Blacks. There's even a cameo with Debbie Harry as a fairy godmother! You can rent this at netflix like I did.

Yeah, the film was really much to do about nothing.Basquiat on the prowl looking for places to crash every night while checking out these groups. It was cool when they showed him creating his famous street art.Basquiat himself was in a group whose name escapes me.

He's a great singer. His first solo album (Meet John Doe) is punk in no way, shape or form, but has some things that I really like on it.

And I'm sure you know he is also an actor who appeared in the horrible Great Balls of Fire (among other things). Didn't he also duet with Sandra Bernhard in Without You, I'm Nothing?

oh yes! i'm very aware of his duet with sandra! i have that sucker on videotape somewhere in my apartment, probably right next to my copy of "decline of western civilization", ha. i love that scene - sandra plays a pretentious soho-ite who buys some potlatch at an auction to feel closer to the simple life. very funny stuff.
