This soundtrack is of such beauty it deserves it's own thread. The movie, already haunting, made an even deeper impression on me because of the music.

The title track has the power to immediately get me melancholic, but in a beautiful, reflective way.

After the week I had this is just what I need.

Ryuichi is one of my favorites! and so is that theme! Do you like the vocal version he does with David Sylvian, called "Forbidden Colors"?...

Actually, Forbidden Colours was my introduction to this soundtrack, even before I ever got to see the movie.

The song was a huge hit back in the day in The Netherlands.

IMHO Sakamoto is one of the greatest artist of our time.
I think he is a genius and one of the few (if not the one) of my favourite musician again able to surprise me record by record.
There are a lot of worthy Sakamoto releases, but if I can give you a hint try the "1996" CD; it's a trio rendition of old and new songs with a powerful and atmospheric version of the "Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence" theme.

He is quite amazing. Forbidden Colours remains one of my favourite songs. I was stunned that David Sylvian left it off the remastered "Secrets" (I am assuming due to his spiritual beliefs having taken a different direction). Does anyone have Ryuichi Sakamoto's recent "Chasms" cd? I've heard "War and Peace" a few times now and find it very compelling. Thank you BoraBora for the recommendation ~ I'm never quite sure where to start with him. The movie was haunting and affected me so deeply ~ I cried and cried. Bowie was fabulous in it ~ he transcended the entire story. Ryuichi Sakamoto played a role in it too.

I have both the Japanese & U.S. release (they're different, the US CD loses "The Landsong" but instead it has the tracks "Word" and "Song"...); personally I find it a real gem but it is so strange and unconventional that I suggest you to try to give it a listen before to eventually buy it. It mixes a lot of different styles.
I agree with you, "War & Peace" is great.
I also love "Undercooled", "World Citizen" (again with David Sylvian) and "The Landsong".

You have my copy of the movie ~ Bowie was stunning in it ~ we need to watch that. Does anyone know if Ryuichi Sakamoto ever worked with Andre Chimenti (another Sylvian collaborator)? I have a cd of his that sounds like it has strong influences of Sakamoto but can't put my hands on it right now to see.
