"John, I'm Only Dancing" is the epitome of a gay sex song.

I think pretty much anything after The Pet Shops "Very" CD The boys became lyrically gay male oriented.

Not that I can think of, no. Then again, I'm not a master of his catalogue, so I could be wrong. shrug

"john, i'm only dancing" is about a guy who dances with a girl, which gets his boyfriend jealous.

i've always thought of "sweet thing/candidate/sweet thing (reprise)" as an exchange between a hustler and a rich old man who hires his services, but i could be way off.

as recently as the outside album, on "hallo spaceboy", he sings "do you like girls or boys/it's confusing these days".

i wouldn't say bowie's lyrics are "gay", but he's always enjoyed a kind of sexual ambiguity.

On a related note, I seem to recall reading a while back that the bulk of EWF's love songs were intentionally non-gender specific so that everyone could relate to them.

Actually, you said it better - those songs have a sexual ambiguity, rather than being 'gay'.

I always thought he put the 'You get a girl' line into Boys keep swinging just to keep people guessing.

I had to go read the lyrics to John, I'm only dancing, and you're right - it does appear to be about dancing with another guy's girlfriend. How many years have I got that wrong for ? I thought he was dancing with another guy, but it's ok, cos he's only dancing, John.

Candidate's as gay as Christmas though. Either that or it's about the weather. biggrin

On Sylvester's live album, he sings "Lover Man Where Can You Be". Also, on "Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves" his says at the beginning....

I would like to dedicate this to my lover who is in the audience who I love very much.

On most of his songs, he never says whether it's a male or female but he has been specific before.

i figured it was vice versa...the character in the song goes out dancing with his boyfriend, but ends up on the dancefloor with a girl. the boyfriend gets upset. bowie's character sings, "john, i'm only dancing. she turns me on. but i'm only dancing."

Elton John doesn't write the lyrics to his songs. he writes the music. Bernie wrote the lyrics to Daniel so unless Bernie is gay i think it's just about someone returning from Vietnam

It annoys me a lot more when i hear openly gay artists, usually guys, singing about girls! The only example I can think of is manufactured pop, I remember hearing one of Will Young's songs on the radio and he kept saying girl, I just thought, God, have some spine, dont sell your soul for a record deal!

Boybands do it all the time too. Its such a crock.

he has one lyric on the album where's he's saying "When i put your cock on my lips" or something to that effect. from what i can remember, most of the album is dealing with relationships.

it's a great album, but i always have trouble with the lyrics in that song. i'm not homophobic or nothing like that, i'm just not use to that kind of stuff! eek

Magnetic Fields has a ton. But there's straight gender preferenced songs too. But he's an 'out' artist, as far as I know. Course, I wouldn't call that mainstream, really, either.
