When is the last time you heard some decent funk made? Some people are always saying...."There is still good music out there these days but you have to look for it". Well, for me, if it ain't funk, it can stay lost and hidden wherever it's at. It's time to put your money where your mouth is. When is the last time you heard some decent funk made?
Of course, Prince still makes funk. Jamiroquai has some decent funk also. I thought Madonna's song "Music" was kinda funky. Other than that, I have to go back to around 1994, 1995, and 1996 with Cameo's "In The Face Of Funk" album, The Barkays' "48 Hours" album, and War's "Peace Sign" album. A few years before that was The Barkays' "Put A Little Nasty On It" single and Roger's "Bridging The Gap" album. Other than those very few and a few tracks from Lenny Kravitz such as "Come On And Love Me", I can't think of any. The group, M People was funky as hell but that's getting more into the house side, which I love but that's a whole other story. Andy is a four letter word.

There is a dark-skinned Dutch artist called Bastian whose two albums contain great electrofunk cuts. Some of the songs are house-flavoured and others are just more concerned with retro-electronic noodling (with retro computers as the main synthesizers, like the Commodore 64), but songs like "People Change", "Private Parts" and "Cyberbaby" are very much Minneapolis-sound influenced. I had to order my copy of "It's All Downhill From Here" as import though (I think it came straight from the Dutch distributor), but it was very much worth it. Still after two years of buying it it regularily visits my CD player.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - alot like gritty 1969 funk with a bad-ass lead singer and horn section; reminds me of Vicki Anderson records.
Breakestra - real band with instrumentation; they proved they can replay all those sampled funk records from the 60s and 70s, now they cut their own grooves. Chromeo - more electro funk; sounds Prince influenced.

There's some questionable funk on Lenny's 5 album "Straight Cold Player," D'angelos Voodoo (Playa Playa, Left n Right), Badu's Wolrdwide Underground, Meshell Ndegeocello's "Cookie" cd.....

I wouldn't recommend Jamiroquai, Lenny, or D'Angelo for funk music. They can get funky but they aren't primarily funk artists.

Jamiroquai is kind of questionable too..sort of like funk-lite imo. And yeah Daft Punk isn't really funk its more techo -groove. I wonder what some peoples definitions of funk are. Mine is it's got to have a fat bottom and maybe some sludge to it as well. It has to feel and sound "deep" (and not philisophical deep). Think Cameo "I Just Want To Be", Pfunk, some Prince, some Zapp, ...

Andy, you should click on that link that novabreaker posted and listen to those samples. i think you might like it. it has that whole early 80's vibe to it. Another album you might be intereseted in is:
Illoominutty- Weapon of Choice they kind of have that funk rock thang going on, but for the most part this album deals with the funk. i pretty much just consider them an extentsion of P-Funk.
