Channel 802 on directv is an old school rap music channel. The music is not entirely old school. The channel plays music up to about 1992. I dont consider 1992 to be old school for rap, but music from the early eighties and even late 70s is played.

Really? I don't think I have that channel but I may have to investigate!

Some days Channel 802 is Disco but most of the times it is old school rap.

Hells yeah! I love me some old skool rap. By the way, I don't consider rap from the 90's old skool.....

My hair dresser thinks it's hilarious that I listen to Grandmaster Flash because she's a bit younger than me and likes Lil Jon and shite like that. I so desperately want to alk the streets with a boom box on my shoulder, whilst blasting "the message"!

so u don't consider rap from the 90's old skool huh? i don't see how u don't bein that the brothas and sistas had a lot of material 2 draw from 2 make a lot of classics from those 10 years....

ice cube-amerikkka's most wanted/kill at will (1990), death certificate (1991), the predator (1992)
public enemy- fear of a black planet (1990), apocalypse '91...the enemy strikes black 2pac-every album
ice-t-o.g. (1991)
boss-born gangstas (1993)
yo-yo-make way for the motherlode (1991)
mc lyte-act like ya know (1991) aint no other (1993)
eve-ruff ryders 1st lady (1999)
lil kim-hardcore (1996)
geto boys-we cant be stopped (1991) till death so us part (1993)
nas-illmatic (1994) it was written (1996) i am (1998)
notorious b.i.g-ready to die (1994) life after death (1996)
gangstarr-every album
epmd-business never personal (1992) erick sermon-no pressure (1993)

Honestly, I can't really say I liked much rap in the 90's. I would say today's rap is better than it was in the 90's, which sucked in my opinion. Old skool to me is late 70's to 1990.

Eric B and Rakim
Grandmaster Flash & Furious 5

See now this list is what I consider real old skool. That's a great list you have there. Whodini were the bomb. I still love them!

So I guess most of these songs can be found on GH Comps?

Most of these were strictly 12 Inches with no album. Today, most of them can be found on "Street Jams: Electric Funk" (Volumes 1-4).

How can you like old skool hip hop and not like the slowed down way they rap?

It's not the slowed down way they rap that gets on my nerves, it's the slowed down (and stripped down) pace of the music behind the rap.

Back in the day, jams like these were much faster than today's rap and a lot of the songs were made from scratch with no samples. They were funky and could, and did, compete with the funk artists of the day. They were played on the dance floor right along side of artists like Midnight Star and fit right in just as funky.

Today, people seem to be more concerned with what the rappers are saying in the lyrics and don't really care about the music behind them. If they did, they would be complaining about the music because there practically is none behind it. It was the opposite back then. People were more concerned how the music sounded and the lyrics came second. Instrumental sides of 12 Inch rap records like "Planet Rock" were much more popular than the vocal side. Back in the day, it was all about if the song could make you shake some ass.

BTW, lets not forget about "Lookout Weekend", a classic hit Tony wrote for Debbie Deb. cool

Pretty Tony was definately bad. Also, don't forget about another one of his protegees, the singer, Trinere.

Strictly 12 Inches unless you get a compilation. You might could check Tower Records web site and see Pretty Tony and Freestyle may have possibly released a greatest hits collection now that the CD era is in full swing.

You probably have heard of his protegee, Trinere. She had an album in the late 1980s with songs like:

They're Playing Our Song
All Night
I'll Be All You Ever Need
How Can We Be Wrong

Grandmasterflash rapped about some social issues.when i first got into rap I was like 7 at the time. GrandmasterFlash had came out with "The Message" which is one of my favorite all time rap songs. then you had Kurtis Blow, The Sequence, Sugarhill Gang, Jimmy Spicer and quite a few others. I still listened to some old school rap.

It's the only rap I listen to. I listen to people like Egyptian Lover, Pretty Tony and Freestyle, Soul Sonic Force, Divine Sounds, Twilight 22, Newcleus, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, and Kurtis Blow all the time.

Newcleus had that one song called "jam on it". Ilike that one too. Some of these "newschool rappers" are no that talented these days.
