I used to like Mtume back in the day, he had some good songs out. I especially liked "Juicy Fruit". RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I remember when James Mtume was on video soul with Donnie Simpson back in the 80's. He ripped the Time and Vanity. His problem with the Time was the lyrics to the song "Ice Cream Castles" He felt that the song dissed black women and encouraged brothers to date white women. Then he went on a rant about Vanity referring to black men as gorillas during an interview with Arsenio Hall. She supposedly said "Hey my mom was married to a gorilla, she married a black man" Whew that pissed James off!

James has always been very outspoken and very critical of other artists. He even dissed rap in the mid-80s,saying "These kids don't know how to make music".One rap group took offense.I can't remember their name, but they released a song called "Talkin All That Jazz" and it was directed at James.

Very, very strange ... as i remember him using on his " Theatre Of The Mind "-album , the rappers Dr.Jeckyl & Mr.Hyde ( as in this context it fits the above statement ) . But i really didn't know about his critical points of view ( missed to see those tv-shows ). . . . [Edited 11/15/05 14:55pm]
