Paul Weller / The Jam / Style Council

I scoffed at him for most of my teenage years. Always hated his popularity amongst music snobs so I opted only for The Style Council, but I just bought 'Stanley Road' and I'm gradually being won over. 'You Do Something To Me' is utterly beautiful touched

I just got "The Sound of the Jam," and I'm starting to get into it. I'd never heard any of their stuff before.

It's sort of Clash-meets-Beatles

the jam are great. they are one of my favorites. setting sons, all mod cons, sound effects, and the gift are great albums. paul weller's writing haad a lot of heart, and as a trio, they had a really big sound. bruce foxton was a great bass player.

to listen to the jam, through the style council, and then to paul's solo stuff is really interesting. it really traces maturing and changes of an artist. paul wellers first solo album is top notch

All Mod Cons is one of my favorite albums of all time. There is not one bad song on there.

At his best, Paul Weller is one of the greatest songwriters alive. At his worst, he sucks bad gas.

Here's what to get:

The Jam - All Mod Cons, Setting Sons, Sound Affects, The Gift.

You'll also need a decent, recent and fully comprehensive compilation because they released a whole bunch of stand alone singles and many great B-Sides. If you're in America, try and get "Snap!" It's been reissued on a specialist label. See allmusic.com for details.

The Style Council - this one's tricky, because they didn't make a flat out masterpiece, although Introducing The Style Council, a mini album, is superb; try either Cafe Bleu (Weller at his most experimental, neo-jazz lite) or Our Favourite Shop, but a good compilation should cover all the bases. Jst make sure it includes the full-length versions of Long Hot Summer, My Ever Changing Moods and Have You Ever Had It Blue.

Paul Weller - the eponymous debut and Wild Wood are, I think, much better than Stanley Road. His current album - As Is Now - is the first album of his I've bought in ten years and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good it is. The ones in between are hit and miss, with the covers album (Studio 150) supposedely being his worst.

I bought "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" soundtrack for Dionne Farris' cover of "For Once in My Life."

Nowadays, I spin it for PW's "You Do Something to Me." That song is TOUGH!!! I've burnt that for many a g/f...

I thought his 1992 solo album, Paul Weller, was slammin, especially the track, "Above The Clouds"...it had that Classic Soul feel to it...

I also dug the Style Council! my favorite tracks:

My Ever Changing Moods (Single version)
Long Hot Summer (Live)
Luck
A Stone's Throw Away
Down In The Seine
Cafe Bleu
Walking The Night
It's A Very Deep Sea
Confessions 1, 2 and 3
The Gardner Of Eden
Shout To The Top (Live)
Why I Went Missing
-(I could never prove it , but I could swear Biz Markie heard this song before he did "Just a Friend"...)

biggrin Nice cut! I especially like the live version!

The song "Above The Clouds" from his first solo album, is in the same vein....
