Can They Make A Come Back? (Recent Pop Stars Edition)

everyone knows if you're out of the spotlight for more than a year, maybe less, it's almost career suicide. so below are a few "artists" that IMO didn't necessarily slowly die out of the spotlight, but almost instantly disappeared from the charts for one reason or another. so what do you think...

1. yeah...they're pretty much over
2. naw..they can make a come back easily
3. i hope not

Christina Aguilera: a cancelled tour, due to "health reasons" as she put it; (but as reported most likely lack of ticket sales) an occasional song here and there on soundtracks or compilations. damn near 3 years since her last album. rumours that the new album will have a "40's vibe" to it.

Brandy: i think has a very similar scenario to Britney.

Toni Braxton: financial woes, a flop album "More Than A Woman", a sitcom supposedly in the works, and just released a brilliant new album "Libra" that has received little to no attention.

Whitney Houston: after her greatest hits album, and selling maybe 6 copies of her album "Just Shitney..errrr i mean "Just Whitney" cancelled tour after cancelled tour, well you guys know the rest.. lol

Michael Jackson: neutral

Monica: hit after hit, Grammy winner..."After The Storm" is a good album..but went nowhere.

P!nk: great debut album, critically acclaiimed 2nd album spawning even more hits, Grammy winner for colaboration on "Lady Marmalade", flop album "Try This",
and then.....
whistling

Britney Spears: 4 chart topping albums. became one of the world's top selling female artists ever, a quickie marriage/divorce, a greatest hits package, remarried and now on maternity leave. lol

and don't try to get smart with your answers. no no no! you all know what i mean.
i'm bored... so sue me. lol

pink is either going to come back bigtime or become one of the most embarrassing comeback flops of recent years. i think she's been so quiet lately because she's been making the janis joplin bio-pic, which seems to be designed to do for her what 'lady sings the blues' did for diana ross or what 'the rose' did for bette midler (just my speculation).

now, i'm one of the few people i know who will defend pink as a talented vocalist...i didn't think much of her until i saw her do a live showcase on a VH1 special a few years back, and i was blown away by how well that girl could sing. she's got an amazing voice that isn't done justice by the pop crap on most of her albums. she could do some modest justice to janis' classics, but the thing is, janis sang the shit out of them so well the first time around, pink's got some awful big shoes to fill. it's either going to be an amazing attempt or a complete travesty. i hope it's a success, but as much as i love janis, they better do right by her.

I wish Pink well. I hope she can make a long career for herself. I'm not a superfan, but I really like a lot of her songs.

nod

I think I respect Pink more than I like her; I give her props for working with Tim Armstong on her last CD. Instead of working with all of teh hot producers of the moment, the chick went out and found her own guys and did her own thing. So the album didnt' sell very many copies... I still think it's better than her first two discs. I think with the right songs she could still have a career ahead of her. Just my 2 cents.

I think these two can make a comeback, because they have such a strong fan-base, and have lasted this long. Besides, both just whitney and invincible had many decent songs. It`s kinda sad when their personal lives takes the focus away from what`s important nutty

I see that they all have the potential and even talent to comeback or it is possible they never will, especially in this envoirnment that isn't all the fond of pop stars. Nearly nameless R&B stars that don't make waves are fine, but if you have charisma, get the fuck out!

On a one by one basis...

Christina-I'm honestly not sure what her last few collobrations were about....most girls start by singing hooks on rappers songs, not vice versus. As Mariah has proved, get back to doing your own album and get away from throwaway soundtrack songs and/or disopable rap-pop radio tracks, and you'll be ok. They are good for some exposure, but not a career (they might have hurt Janet a little....her albums used to be their own events). Not sure about the '40s concpet album. Sounds like a mess! Overall, she should be OK.

Brandy-Talented but honestly I bought her greatest hits CD not too long ago and while I knew all the songs, in general it didn't work for me. However, her "Afrodiasic" was hot! She needs to get more into that kind of funky R&B and away from the poppy stuff and the Rodney Jerkins tired beats... We'll have to wait and hear. She should also write more, even though I don't think the last one had any tracks written by her..

Toni Braxton-She needs better promotion. She'll probably always have a small but loyal audeince, but unless she takes some chances and gets better people, she won't have another hit album or even single.

Whitney Houston-Needs to get her life in check, then she can make a comeback. Bobby Brown is killing her as a performer. And frankly, she doesn't seem to care. She knows what she has to do. The occassional sober appearance does not a career make.

Michael Jackson-I stay away from MJ and the possiblity of a comeback.... If I got into those converstations, I would have to quit my student teaching and devote all my time to this. In a few words, there are a many possiblities for MJ, but only a few involve him coming back in the US.

Monica-Her last album seemed to do OK (and she slowly had another hit off of it a year after it was released...impressive staying power), but she needs to get people's attention as well. Try something new. If she goes down the hip-hop chorus route, she's doomed.

Pink-I don't think so unless her next album is really good and really well promoted. Dispite the fact that the 2nd album really seemed to have more than just big hits but really strong and/or personal pop sonngs, and was more than just a trival pop hit, she still could go down as a pop culture joke at best!

Britney-Sigh....If she cares and wises up, she can. She can't always be naive white trash. Her marriage to Federline is the white Bobby and Whitney, only it would be as if Whitney married Bobby after her "Greatest Hits" underperformed...Britney married him right when her career started hitting the skids. If the new album really takes chances (and "In The Zone" was a generic attempt that at....her heart has to be in it, nor where her producers), she could be a pop star for the ages....if she keeps the path she is going down, she'll just be a tabloid queen with no real career!

I think Michael has the best shot of all. His albums, even the duds like "Invincible" are hyped like a holiday.

Michael is also the person I want to see back on top. People need to remember Michael for what he does on stage, not what he does in a court room, or at Neverland.

I think IF Michael gets with the right producers and puts all of himself in it, it will be like Santana's "Supernatural" as far as critical and public acclaim. However, if not, I think it will be like "Invincible" start out at the top, with a radio hit, and then be forgotten after 6 months.

I'd still say..do an Unplugged album or Unplugged tour. His dancing as of late is getting tired..and he needs to upgrade his act a bit. This isn't 1995 anymore.

As for the rest..to be honest..Michael is the only one I care about. Good luck to them though!
