Review the decades!

I think all you music geeks have something to say about each decade. What did you like about them? Which is your favorite? When did (mainstream) music go downhill, if at all?

00 - 09: Can't say anthing on this time.

10 - 19: Ditto.

20 - 29: ...

30 - 39: ...

40 - 49: I like Miles' early stuff, but that's about all I know.

50 - 59: Rock N'Roll! A really interesting time, not just musically but also the rebellion that came with it. Does anyone know this old TV clip where some white American denounces Rock'N'Roll as a communist plan to corrupt the youth?

60 - 69: This has to be the best period for popular music. Miles Davis, The Beatles, The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, James Brown, Sly... all this other great soul/funk acts. Must have been great to witness it all first hand!

70 - 79: Again, fantastic time for music. Very close behind the 60s. Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, The Jackson 5/Jacksons are my very favorites.

80 - 89: What happened? I think Prince was about the only one in the mainstream who truly rocked the 80s. The overall production and sound of most acts of the 80s is unbearable, IMO. See Bowie and Stevie Wonder. Sure there were people who could work a drum machine but generally I think it was the worst thing that ever happened to music.
I guess Metal made a big step forward with bands like Metallica or Pantera, but this never really was my music.

90 - 99: Although this was my youth and maybe I should have an affection to it, I cannot say liked the 90s. Sure, Nirvana and Grunge in general had an effect way beyond music, but I was too young for it and still don't really get it today. Beck is great and Meshell Ndegeocello. I don't know if this is a mainly European phenomenon but the amount of techno-pop remixes of old songs from 60s -80s really made me agressive.

2000 - today: Of course there's nice stuff here and there but it's mainly boring had-it-before stuff. Mainstream keeps going downhill of course. I wonder if there will ever be a revolution in music like Rock N'Roll in the 50s or Funk in the 60s/70s...

I love the 70's, 80's and 90's. Before and after that, I have to search harder to find things I like.

The early '60s to mid-'70s are what I'd personally deem the greatest period for music. The diverse rock, the sublime pop, the FUNK, the rich soul, the gorgeous folk.... so much artistry, so much development, so many revolutions, so many monster records... it was awesome. cool

I have massive respect for all decades pre-'60s and realize how crucial they are as well; I just don't care for them.

The '80s are my favorite even I don't feel they're the BEST. The vast amount of cheese and inorganic production notwithstanding, there was Prince in his prime, classic Madonna, new-wave, MJ, the androgyny, the general style, the nostalgia, MTV....

I don't care for the '90s, either, other than some enjoyable pop/R&B acts (Guy, Salt N' Pepa, En Vogue, TLC, etc.). I don't dig grunge/alternative/miscellaneous and then there's the likes of Britney, N*SYNC, Spice Girls...

And as for the current '00s, quality music still lives.. it just sure as hell doesn't lie within the mainstream for a good part, and where's the innovation or musical revolutions anywhere? bored

The 70's are my sentimental favorite.

The late 30's, early 40's, and early to mid 50's were revolutionary for the development of bop, which influenced rock.

The 60's was the most dynamic decade for pop music, full of fluff, soul, and revolutionary music. The Temps, The Beatles, The Doors, The Supremes, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones . . . Man! On paper, that's hard to top!

The 80's? Prince, hip-hop, the rise of "alternative" rock, the dawn of the music video, and tons of unforgettable one-hit wonders and megastars.

The 90's amd 00's? Wellll . . . jury's still out for me!
