Gabriel Eyes Genesis

Original frontman says reunion talks are imminent

Will the Lamb lie down on Broadway once more? For years, the former members of Genesis have said that they are ready, willing and able to reform the group at original frontman Peter Gabriel's whim -- and for years Gabriel has adamantly refused. Until now. "The odds are better now than before," Gabriel tells Rolling Stone. "We're going to have the conversation."

Aside from a one-off concert in 1982, Gabriel has not stood on stage with the classic five-man Genesis lineup since the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour ended in May of 1975. Phil Collins, who had played drums since joining the group prior to its third album in 1971, took over as vocalist in 1976 and lifted the British art rockers to stadiums all over the world. Collins quit the group after 1992's We Can't Dance tour to focus on his successful solo career. Remaining members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recruited former Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson for the 1997 release Calling All Stations, which fared so poorly that Genesis were forced to cancel a tour of American theaters. The group quietly folded in 1998.

Since then, a large cult of fans (particularly of the Gabriel era) have kept the Genesis flame alive. Phil Collins played with Genesis tribute band the Musical Box -- who recreate the Gabriel era with frightening precision -- when they visited his hometown of Geneva, Switzerland recently. Earlier this week, Collins reaffirmed his desire to drum again for the real thing during a Tel Aviv press conference. Last month, guitarist Steve Hackett told the Chicago Sun-Times that he received a phone call from Genesis management. "There's a movement to put us all together again," he said. "I do think it will happen."

Notorious perfectionist Gabriel warns that any reunion concert would require serious preparation time. "When we got back together in 1982, I don't think we rehearsed," he says. "To really do it properly, we'd have to take more time. It's quite a commitment."

When pushed to definitely say if the group is reuniting, Gabriel remains coy: "I wouldn't put money on it . . . yet."

Damn, that's music to my ears. I've been diggin' a lot of Genesis lately. I do wish though, if they do reunite, it would be behind some new music and not just an oldies retrospective. But again, I'll take what I can get. Seems though Peter Gabriel hates going backwards so maybe they will try to write new music together. We'll see.

Hmm, I'm a big PG fan, but somehow I'm not immediately highly excited by this prospect. "Why do this?" is the question in my mind, but maybe I'm just a cynic.

The idea of them doing new music together is interesting, but I dunno how likely that is. Maybe they should do a live performance of The Lamb, seeing as it was never filmed back in the day? I guess some solid performances of the PG-era Genesis stuff would be cool, I'd certainly give it a look/listen.

I'd just be happy with a decent new Peter Gabriel CD.

yeah, I heard Phill say recently that he wouldn't mind if Peter gabriel did lead and he played the drums? I was like, word? 4 real?

I would like to hear something along the lines of, Physical Touch, Don't Lose My Number, and the like.

I think with PG's interest in multimedia and current technology and the theatrical nature of Genesis, a new outing might be really cool. Or as Candaces mentioned, the lamb performed live. I would prefer a whole update reworking of the whole thing. Modernize it but don't lose original intents and concepts. BTW did ya'll know Genesis reunited in '99 for a reworking of The Carpet Crawlers with Trevor Horn producing. It was on a greatest hits cd that came out at that time. It had both PG and PC sharing vocals. It was kinda cool.

That's an interesting prospect, and it would be great to get Phil to focus on some decent music again...how long has it been since THAT happened?....

well.. Why can't they both do a john and paul thing.. they take songs from each of them (or together) and sing on every other track..

cause I prefer phils voice...

I actually prefer the Phil era, particularly from '76 to '83 or so....

But any kind of Genesis reunion involving one or both of the first two lead singers is cause for celebration!

I just hope they record some new music together.
