GOOD jazz/fusion albums....

I am totally hooked on the jazz fusion music of the 70's. What are some good jazz/fusion albums? I already have "Power Of Soul" by Idris Muhammad, "School Days" by Stanley Clarke, "Headhunetrs" by Herbie Hancock, "Prelusion/Beyond The Dawn" by Patrice Rushen, "Free As The Wind" and "Images" by The Crusaders, "8:30" by Weather Report and "Sun Goddess" by Ramsey Lewis. What are some other good jazz/fusion albums?

A bit of a "Starter Kit"...

Miles Davis ('69 forward)

Tony Williams Lifetime
Larry Young

Herbie Hancock ('70s)

Mahavishnu Orchestra
Billy Cobham

Weather Report
Jaco Pastorius

Return To Forever
Lenny White
Stanley Clarke

...Almost anything by the above artists during the 70s should get you going in the right direction.

Maybe more specifics when I have time.

Check out a group called Niacin. It's a keyboard trio with John Novello, Dennis Chambers, and Billy Sheehan (yes the guy from Mr.Big! He's an INCREDIBLE bassist!) Their albums are all pretty good.

Also dont' forget Return To Forever! "Light As A Feather" in a really great album as is "Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy"

Mahavishnu Orchestra is good, "Birds Of Fire" is their landmark though most of their stuff is pretty good too.

I forgot that I do have the "Light As A Feather" CD from RETURN TO FOREVER. I love "Spain."
Everytime I listen to that CD, I'm reminded of that old show, "Que Pasa USA." LOL!

confuse I never knew these to be Jazz-Fusion groups in the accepted sense of the term.

I think those other groups were included cuz they had elements of jazz on their albums. Back then, music wasnt as "restricting" IMO.....for instance, on the Ohio Players song "What the Hell", its jazz, funk and rock all up in that song....

ohio players, kool & the gang, war and heatwave were put into the r&b category, but these guys were most definitely fusion bands.....just listen 2 the following cuts and you'll see what i mean....

sweet sticky thing/alone/let's love/heaven must be like this-ohio players
lotus blossom/smile happy/don't let no one get you down-war
star of a story/mind blowing decisions/boogie nights/aint no half steppin-heatwave
summer madness (live)/whos gonna take the weight? (live)/winter sadness/wichita lineman-kool & the gang

and while you're at it try these too....

edgar winter-they only come out at night
quincy jones-you've got it bad girl
issac hayes-to be continued/hot buttered soul
marvin gaye-i want you
average white band-soul searching

Well, I'd personally rather stay with my both feet fixed to Earth though. smile

My favourite fusion album just might be "I Sing The Body Electronic" by Weather Report. But I really haven't listened to much new stuff lately, I was into the said style of music in my teens but my interest has mostly waned.
