Anybody pick this up last week? I've heard a couple of tracks and I'm very impressed by Danger and that track with Rufus Wainwright. I'm really shocked to see the names Dr. Dre and Burt Bacharach associated with the same recording.

Any thoughts?

I haven't listened to it all the way through yet, but I do like it. His arrangements are still good, but you have to be able to accept that nothing can really compare to his work in the 60s. It's very political, which I wasn't expecting. I read a brief piece in Rolling Stone where he divulged that he'd never been politically active and had, in fact, missed elections on many years. It's very clear that the current political climate is heavy on his mind. That really drives the album. It's a bit heavy-handed at times, but most of the time is makes for good material. From start to finish, it's really dark and sad.

The Dre thing is odd, but I went with it. It's just some drum loops. Bacharach's music has always been geared toward the AC audience, and this one is no exception. In a way, it's the album's detriment. Musicianship is excellent, nice arrangements, great vocals (Bacharach's voice is just okay, but the guests are nice), but the whole project feels a bit safe. I love Is Love Enough, and Can't Get Enough sounds like it could have been written in his heyday. I haven't listened through it enough to get a feel for the rest of the songs, but on the whole it is a good album. It's certainly better than a lot that's out there today, which - again, according to the RS piece - is why he did the album.

I've really been into Bacharach's music lately. Not the gazillion collaborations he did in the 90s when he became retro-hip, but his classic stuff. Incidentally, I just watched a DVD about The Carpenters, and Bacharach was on there discussing Close to You. Dionne Warwick did the demo recording, but the first to actually cut the tune for an album was Richard Chamberlain! Bacharach produced it for him in 1963, and described the recording as "lame."

I think that's why I was so intrigued. I mean what I heard doesn't compare to the classics but for a man who hasn't recorded consistently, it was pretty damn good. There were elements of his classic stuff fused with some contempo stuff on what I heard (*cough* why I'm so dissappointed in Stevie's new record *cough*)

hehe, seriously, I haven't listened to it yet (except for a short soundclip from just a few seconds), but I will the next time I'm at the store. but the combination sure sounds interesting, can be everyhting... should beat Ethel Merman's Disco and Pat Boone's Metal albums easily
