out of ALL the divas...

CHER is the best actress

JANET is the second best

MADONNA has done a few good performances (Desperately Seeking Susan, Evita, Dangerous Game) but overall is very AVERAGE or even SUBPAR

WHITNEY sucks (lord have mercy)

MARIAH is the WORST

IMHO of course...

and ERYKAH ain't bad

I would put Bette Midler up there with Cher as an actress.

True. But both she and Cher were kind of actors/singers simultaneously. It was always a package deal.

Bette in The Rose "phone booth" scene (you know it if you've seen it) always breaks my heart. Who the fuck won best actress that year lol?

She was on Good Times, A New Kind of Family, Diff'rent Strokes, and Fame before she became a singer. She has not embarrassed herself in her film roles. I'm sorry, but I don't see what she has to "prove" - unless you want her to tackle a hard dramatic part like Swept Away biggrin

Madonna's just got a really unfortunate problem when it comes to movies. Her speaking voice. It's just so thought out and and enunciated. She always sounds like she's reading cue cards. Think about it, when she's basically played herself (Desperately Seeking Susan or Who's That Girl?), she's not bad. When she does dramatic parts in videos (Oh Father, Papa Don't Preach, Bad Girl), she's likeable and believeable. She was good in Evita cuz there was basically no talking. It's that damn voice that gets in the way! Same problem with Keanu Reaves. He might be an okay actor if it wasn't for that totally dopey, shallow voice of his. I think if she EVER tries to attempt a major role again, she needs to work with a coach who can loosen her up and give her a more natural way of speaking and presenting her lines. It's just too comical to hear her say "That's what men do...men lie," from Body of Evidence. How can you take her seriously! lol For her, it's not for lack of screen presence or charisma or emotion. Somebody should tell her it's her voice and delivery.

somebody did..camille pagilia wrote a wonderful essay all on the subject of her speech while acting.....i posted it here many many moons ago.

it doesnt appear to be archived...errr...one day when the org search works ill have to find it..lol.it was a great analysis that highlighted her positive attributes in acting and her refusal to stop sounding as if she is reading directly from the script when playing non-madge like characters.

I agree completely! I wish she'd work less on her face and more on her film. I have many favorite film performances, and her turn in Mask is one of them.

oooh-oooh-oooh! I.LOVE.THAT.SCENE. razz

I don't know if people realize, but in that scene she's back at the field from her high school where she was gang-bang/raped by the football team as a teenager...trying to connect with her mom and dad...to complete the circle of her life, as it were...who can forget those first words...

"...hello..., ma....?"

AAAAAH!!!!! Love the Divine Miss M!!!!

Other than that, sounds cool.

janet aint no meryl streep either though...

actually...janet showed potential in poetic justice..but she needs a much stronger director to pull good things out of her.

right now she is on par with madge, whitney and mariah in the acting skills..... ill

Man, thats crazier then u thinking adams groove by hammer is a classic.

As i have said, 2puc saved it from being ur average tv movie.

2pac acted her off the screen. And i know janets character was shitty and dull, but still, she wern't terrible, but not promising either.

The score to "poetic justice" was nice though. Fuck, the soundrack didn't include it though did it? It does have one of the best lines ever.

"frankly my dear i dont give a shit". I love that line and the way it was delivered.

I suggest you watch his recent movies "Party Monster" and "Saved". He did a pretty good job acting in both.

CynicKill

Mariah isn't that bad. "Glitter" was worse then she was. And when she's plaing herself ("Wisegirls") she's good, like when Madonna plays herself.

Whitney is ok until she has to share a scene with someone who can act (Angela Bassett), then her flaws shine through.

Diana Ross is the best to me. Even in a bad-movies-we-love film like "Mahogany" she's great. Cher is awesome.

And who beat Bette Midler the year she was nominated for "The Rose"? Sally Field for "Norma Rae". It was one of those Diana Ross/Liza Minnelli years.

I *did* watch Party Monster! disbelief He has no sort of delivery or emotion, he just says his lines.

That was the main complaint critics had of him. The reason he was acting that way was because the actual Michael Alig character that he portrayed was like that as well. The real Michael Alig was kind of superficial and devoid of actual emotion.Mac's acting makes more sense if you watch Party Monster: The Shockumentary, which features actual footage of the clubkids.

I thought Mac had Michael Alig right on target.
