I love Mariah Carey! I thought Glitter sucked mainly because I dont't like that type of music but older friends of mine loved it, isn't it supposed to be the soundtrack to her film which is set (in part) in the 80's ? so you would expect it to sound dated.
I actually think that shes's improved over the years up untill Glitter. she still does her famous ballads but now tries new (well at least for her style) things, to me the growth between Daydream, Butterfly and Rainbow was quite amazing. theres more variation in her music rather than the same type of songs seen on Music Box or Emotions. Im not saying either of those albums are bad as I still listen to some of the tracks now. although I can understand why some people prefer the 'old' Mariah but it's still interesting to see how an artist grows through out thir carrer.
As for any artist, I do not believe appearance is important,i recently read another thread in which people reffered to the belief that India Arie doesn't get attention because of her looks(in comparison to Alicia Keys) some people responded how looks are not important, its talent that counts etc well isn't that applicable here ? who cares how she dresses or what clothes size she is now ? I don't care if the artist I like wears nothing on stage Im more concerened with what they have to say/sing.

When it comes to Mariah Carey, I'm only thinking about two things, music and sex.

I'd prefer Mariah to keep undressing to as much as she can get away with. Damn!!

As far as the music goes, I was once a huge fan. However, when Daydream came out it was a somewhat weaker effort than the previous albums. Butterfly came out and I didn't like how she was starting to be so influenced by hip hop just because I'm not really into hip hop. However, the album grew on me and I think it's her best along with the first two albums. However, Rainbow just really left me uninterested. That was such a weak effort, and I could tell she threw something together to get away from her sony contract. That album was so weak, that the only thing that sold it was the album photos!

However, I liked Glitter. What can I say, I love the vintage 80s sound of the album. I think Mariah's going to be okay, she just needs to concentrate on her music and songwriting- and I will say that I have been disappointed that her singing voice-quality has gone down ever since the third album. She sings way too breathy now.

My favorite Mariah Carey songs are...

***"Can't Let Go"(1991)---This is the type of soulful, heartfelt ballad that you don't hear from her these days.

***"Always Be My Baby"(1995)---I love this song!! Remember the remix with Excape?

***"Breakdown"(1997)---To those of you who criticize the amount of hip-hop in her music, you gotta admit this song kicks ass. It's a wonderful collaboration with Bone Thugs N' Harmony. She looked great in the video too, laying on that pool table;)

***"Never Too Far"(2001)---I love the ending of 'Glitter' when Mariah is singing this song right after the death of her "DJ" boyfriend. This song is nice and, under normal circumstances, would have been a Number One smash.

***"Twister"(2001)---another highlight of the 'Glitter' soundtrack. When you really think about it,'Glitter' is actually a very consistent album. It's not her BEST work, but it's not the artistic fiasco that so many people think it is.

I gotta chime in.

Mariah is the bomb. She has superior talent to most of the singers out there. She's still in a point of transition in her career. From her first CD up to just before Butterfly, she was tightly controlled by Mattola (The devil evil according to MJ) That included music, videos, image... And that was good and bad. Mariah was a smash, yes, but was it really what she wanted to do?

Now she's on her own and trying to find her way. She's loose of the restraints and has to learn the levels at which she can use certain things, like her looks and sexuality. I agree that she's a bit over the top in terms of her image and the loose-looking clothing. But other things are happening too.

Girlfriend is from Queens New York. Naturally, she wants to bring her joints closer to the sounds of the streets. So all of this 'Daydreaming' and 'Emotions' stuff is not all that she wants to do. Now she can't just abandon her pop sound. And she can't just drop the ballads. so her latest CDs have been a mix of styles. So you'll hear the Pop stuff, like 'Loverboy' (which I didn't care for) and the ballads, plus some more street sounding stuff.

Butterfly had some tight cuts, like 'On the Roof' and 'Breakdown' among others. She really gets to show her stuff on Rainbow. Ever check out the phat backgrounds on 'Cry Baby'? Even Glitter had a gem or two. I really think she's gonna put something on us this winter with her next joint.

Give Mariah a break. She's growing and learning.

...but on the real, I couldn't stand her version of TBO!

hehe she can't win, if she kept her goodie, clean cut image of yesteryear ppl would be saying she's too uppity and shit. Now's trying to go the all out with this sexy look and ppl are ripping into her saying she's swallowed more seamen than the Bermuda triangle.
I think she needs to stabilize and just focus on her career, maybe then she could kick some ass again.

i think mariah is talented, her first album proved that...however for the past few years i haven't really been into her music too much, because she changed her style, etc...but i hope she is better these days, and is feeling better too. i hope her next CD proves everyone wrong about her, and it blows people away! she's talented!

I don't hate Mariah. Feel a bit sorry for her. The girl has an awesome voice, you can't deny that, but the last few years haven't been so fruitful musically. I began to lose it when she did that video of her and the girl fighting in the bathroom over some guy. I was thinking - is this the message you want to send to your young fans? That you go out and fight over some stupid ass man??? Hello!!! He's the one cheating, if she had whooped his ass, that would have made one hell of a video. But seriously, I thought she was bigger than that. Then that last video I saw her in was sad. She's pretty, she got body, but unfortunately, you have to have the right level of confidence and attitude to pull off wearing the super sexy duds. When I saw her in the "Lil Kim" wear, it honestly made me feel sad. Sort of that feeling I used to get from Marilyn Monroe when I saw "The Misfits." A woman barely hanging on. I'm not against the "less is more" look, but you have to know what you're doing if you're gonna dress like that because a lot of people are going to think negatively about it. When I heard she had her breakdown (while I didn't understand why), I sort of saw something like that coming.

It's very difficult being in Mariah's position. I imagined her trying to find herself, a new style of music to explore and all, getting older, wanting different things but when you have a lot of money riding on you from a major label, you can't just go and do what you want and you begin to feel trapped and pressured, then looking for love on top of it then you have all the makings of a breakdown.

I hated that some entertainment people, press were making fun of her. That is not a laughing matter and when a person is spiraling downwards like that at least show some compassion and leave them with some dignity. She may have made some bad choices, but heck, all of us have done that.

It sounds like she's getting her stuff together and we'll see with the next album. I was happy to hear that Prince supported her.

Oh my lawd LOL my list would be looong I don't think you could bare wit it but what the hell:

#1-Butterfly--This is 1 powerful ballad, besides it bring some beautiful memories.

#2-I still believe(Damizza mix)--The original is boring but this one is something.

#3-Underneath the stars--This is song is a neo soul cut even tho it was before the whole neo soul mess.

#4-4th of jully--Or should I say the 'Underneath the stars-PT.2'

#5-Breakdown--You said it betta wink

#6-Bliss--The Mariah version of Quincy's cut 'The secret garden'

#7-The wind-Ya'll should take a listen at this song now, its something you'd NEVER EVER expect Mariah to do. Its a pure jazzy blusy mellow cut, a tribute 4 her late friend. I'm not really to fond by the lyrix but her vox and the music was MIND BLOWING. That song reminded me alot of Chaka's tribute to Ella Fitzgerald in 'The end of a love affair' OF COURSE she would neva be Miss Khan but she was kinnda similar to the sistah.

Well?? wink smile That was a lil' sumthin sumthin,,,

Yeah, I hear you on "The Wind". That's a really great song. However, it says a lot that it's on the second album way back when.

My favorite tracks of recent Mariah...Fourth of July, Outside, My All, Never too Far, Didn't Mean to Turn You On.

I HATED the Rainbow album.

I don't understand why Glitter flopped.

I remember seeing Mariah in an interview about a year before Glitter dropped (referred to then as "All That Glitters"). When she said it was a tribute to 80s R&B/Funk and she was working with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Rick James, I was pretty much hooked.

Summer 2001 she appeared on BET 106 & Park and debuted her first single, based on Cameo "Candy"[1986]? C'mon, that ish was crazy! LOVED it. (She also requested that they play Cameo's original video).

On 9/11 I went and copped her record, and it was so funky how she remade Cherrelle "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"[1984] and had the original instrumental!

I think this album is overlooked because Mariah removed the diva facade and we got to see her real inspirations here, as she gave nods to a few other old school jams:
Tom Browne "Funkin' 4 Jamaica"[1981]
Indeep "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life"[1982]

And all y'all flappin ya gums talkin bout she dont use her voice no more... you musta missed the ballads on this joint.

Glitter is one of my MC favorites (dare I say FAVORITE).

Yeah,it baffles me why the 'Glitter' CD didn't do that well.As I said before,it's a very consistent CD.It contains some nice, heartfelt ballads and a bunch of cool dance tracks.I think the failure of the movie had something to do with it.If it was just a new Mariah Carey CD without a film attached to it,it would have fared much better, imo.

I don't dis-like GLITTER at all, but when you compare it to a strong ish like 'Butterfly' then you'd get my point.

Ok there's too many reasons why Glitter flopped and there are some:

1-Her too many delaies(I think 3 times)

2-11/9, ppl didn't have the mood to see MC in a movie.

3-Her breakdown

4-Her tired Loverboy(BTW the original was TIGHT but since J.LO stole it, MC did another one which THE RECENT ONE and ya'll know how louzy it is) I love the Cameo part tho.

5-Her recent image and acting WAS PRETTY LOUZY. The movie was cool to watch but how a 32 yrs old woman can act like a sweet 15?? I can give her the credit 4 that. But you know her fourthcoming Wise Girls is the SHIT ya'll should mos def watch it.

There,,

But there are some pretty DOPE joints in Glitter which are:

1-I didn't mean to turn you on--Word on the street say PRINCE was one of the back-up singers along side Terry Lewis. And you know how P do when he creep into someone's record without crediting his name. Besides, that pretty much sounded like him.

2-All my life-A Mary Jane Gilrz-esque, I looovvve that shit.

3-Last night a DJ saved my life--The only louzy shit was the fucking rappers. But she did a pretty good jop oh and I think the drum programming in the original was funkier and classic

4-Lead the way--IS THE BEST SONG IN THAT GLITTER,,,THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST,,,case closed LOL biggrin!

As soon as she started flaunting those big fake titties, I gave up on her then. I was a fan for a few year and yes I agree that she has a lovely voice, but she's such a loser these days and her fake body is just ridiculous. I can't even stand to watch a video of her anymore. When I see the one where she is driving around in a car with her tits pointing straight out, I just want to grab her and shake her and tell her how absolutely ridiculous she looks. She should just get a huge L tatooed on her forward because she just a big skanky loser these days.

wow, I never knew Mariah said that before. I would have thought that if she did say that it would have got her so much bad publicity. If she said 'Depression is bad and it may lead ppl to the gates of hell!!' then Im assuming that she didn't mean what she said and only said it because she was depressed which is kinda excusable.
