MJ's catalog does pretty good even when he doesn't have a new release out.

For example, in the UK:

January 5, 2005: According to the Official UK Charts Company, Michael Jackson placed three albums (more than any artist) in the 2004 End Of Year UK Album Chart: Number Ones at #57, Thriller at #135 (134,729), and The Very Best Of The Jacksons at #155 (116,000).

March 1st, 2004: In the 2003 UK Album Year End chart, Michael Jackson had 4 entries (more than any other artist) with Number Ones at #8 (960,848), Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume I at #119 (155,000), Thriller at #143 (130,000), and Off The Wall at #189 (100,000).

Update

The Essential:

UK: 40
AUS: 13
Ireland: 16

so in the last two years he's prob sold around 2.5million albums in the UK alone. Amazing. And he generally sells 1 million a year in the US. Thats just two countries, he's just as massive in Germany, France, Japan etc.

um, honestly, does anyone here care? surely such an in-depth weekly sales report would be better suited for an MJ site, you know, where people are actually going to be looking for it....

seems kind of bizarre here, especially when judjing from the posts accumulated in 20 days, it's pretty clear, the only person that cares about it and keeps posting on it is the person who started it.

Its what MJ fans like to do.
With MJ its ALL about the $$$$ - doesn't matter
what music is released the most important issue
to MJ fans is sales.
They are able to verify their obsession with MJ
by concentrating on MJ's sales.
What else can they obsess on?
His rugged good looks?
His scandal free personal life?

Aside from MJ's sales there isn't much good for MJ fans to cling to.

to MJ fans is sales.
They are able to verify their obsession with MJ
by concentrating on MJ's sales.
What else can they obsess on?
His rugged good looks?
His scandal free personal life?

Aside from MJ's sales there isn't much good for MJ fans to cling to.

I think harping on the sales aspect of MJ is a bit old...Bon Jovi pushes a lot of units over the globe as well...but you don't see anyone claiming they are the greatest rock band of their era...I would rather bring up MJ's past great musical prowess (Hell, Off The Wall didn't sell a tenth of Thriller, which I love...or Bad, but it's still his best album, in my opinion)...To me quality matters more than sales....I think the main reason hardcore MJ fans bring up his strong sales across the globe is to combat the criticism that he's washed up, which is a little unfair at times...But those fans only have to look at the man's prime years to know the MJ is among the greats...Fuck the sales...

What's wrong with keeping MJ fans on this board up to date with his worldwide chart performance?

Sounds like sour grapes if you ask me.

I agree.
If looking at MJ's sales chart is an activity
that unites MJ fans then whats the harm?
MJ fans enjoy talking sales.
MJ is popular enough to have worldwide sales.
Record sales have been a big part of the MJ mythology.
He is obsessed with sales.
It makes sense his fans share the same obsession.

I'm seeing some negative sales ratios - looks like MJ is slipping in sales in some areas.
Is this the beginning of a trend?
How long can sales last on a nostaglic act like MJ
when there is no new product in sight?
You can only rehash the past so many times.
Look at this latest chart - 8 out of 14 entries are compilations with the compilations being the high sellers. Cds like Bad or Dangerous barely sell at all when compared to The Essential or Number Ones.

His sales have gone down in the past few weeks due to there being very little press and the fact that he is in the UK. Expect this to change in the coming weeks with the imminent release of the hurricane single!

Yeah whats the story with his hurricane single:
What label is releasing it or is it only a download?
What fellow stars has he recruited?

What negative trend? He sold almost 14k last week which is on par with every other week this year (the main exception being the week after the innocent verdict when he shifted almost 30k).

Currently, he has four releases (almost five) shifting in excess of 2,000 units+ each week.

The Essential may have taken a chunk out of the catalog sales of Thriller and Number Ones since it contains all the major singles, however, once that compilation is off the market in a few years time (when MJ regains ownership of his masters) their sales should return to their pre-Essential level.

BTW, in case you didn't know (which I'm sure you didn't), compilation/greatest hits collections are always the highest selling catalog titles in an artist's repetoire. Most retailers with limited shelf space would rather place their bets on the sure thing which means GH win out over studio albums any day. Case in point: Shania Twain's Come On Over which saw its sales plummet upon the release of her Greatest Hits last year.

Only the most classic albums (which retailers agree to stock) are lucky enough to shift thousands of copies each week years after their release (eg. Thriller, Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall, etc.)

BTW... here's something for you to munch on....Number Ones is set to scan 1 million in a few weeks.
