Just the beginning of her musicology era.

?

wouldn't she first have to go through a diamonds and pearls/symbol era followed by a gold/chaos and disorder era followed by an emancipation/crystal ball era followed by a dismal newpowersoul era and rave un2 the joy fantastic era? then maybe she could have a musicology era.

lol

The only songs I know from that album are the title track and "Hollywood" and they are both tremendously underrated. Folks, the rap was ironic.

I'm curious: what are the complaints about this album?

well, duh! if you don't like madonna at all its kinda hard for you to give your opinion on where she is in her career. lol it would be like someone who dislikes prince saying that his lovesexy phase is the same as his symbol phase. it kind of loses credibility, no?

and i'm still trying to see this "big picture" of yours.

this new madonna record is not top 40 pop either. i don't see it having a huge impact on american audiences, it sounds like europop to a t. which is brilliant by my sentiments!

hey, maybe this whole "not top 40" thing is the big picture origmind was talking about. shrug

The song is growing on me over in UK, as "music" did (god i hated it at first, and the video was original too)

Yeah, ur right the track is very euro. Heck, i'd rather dance to this then kelly clarkson faux rock or whatever america thows at us over here. Interesting to see how it will do in US?

i've wondered that for a while now. madonna gets a whole lot more praise here than prince does and this site is dedicated to HIM. now i like madonna a lot but this is something i've noticed for quite sometime. strange but true.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

if you want Prince praise go the section of this site that is devouted to him.

Music:Prince. there is a whole section there.

This if you forgot is
Music:Non-Prince.

I'm not looking for Prince "praise". Nothing is above the realm of ridicule.

My bad - I missed the quotation marks around Musicology. I wouldn't say he's "moved on" though; I would think that there were several songs on the album that were attempts at Top-40 hits (it's not exactly Trout Mask Replica), I just think he was having a bit of a hook drought.

That isn't the big picture either because Madonna's new single debuted in the top 20 in the U.S. last week. Americans were downloading it like crazy the first week. It remains to be seen how much airplay it will get from radio.

Just grabbing at straws I'd say there's somewhat of a similarity between the retro delivery of the music, image and performance. Prince was going for a classic 70's soul vibe and Madonna is going for late 70's disco. Sort of returning to their roots, but also digging deeper to an era right before they debuted. And, both albums seem to be a bid for the mainstream after the insular, message-driven and dark "American Life" and "The Rainbow Children". But I can't see much in common past that.
