I can't acknowledge him as a saviour of modern R&B just because he plays piano and can sing a nice hook. I can't get past Ordinary People being a bite off of D'Angelo's 'Africa'... if you've heard the acoustic piano version of 'Africa' then you should know what I'm talking about.
But hopefully he along with Ms. Keys will get some of that artist development that's so lacking in all music right now. We all get so caught up in trying to spot the next big thing that we never give the artist room to grow. I'm gonna give him a chance because one day he might do something that's a masterpiece. Well said Soul. I haven't listened to much of his music but what i've heard hasn't really touched me. Listening to his performance on the BET Anniversary show, his voice became annoying to me at times. As you said though, growth over time might bring some surprises. Maybe writing, instead of performing, is his forte. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 and thats why i give him credit over the alicia keys and josh stones of the world..his people arent overhyping him....no, he isnt a "legend" but give the guy some time...at least his p/r machine aint pulling a miramax and pulling a grammy stunt to trump up credibility like alicia keyes. I saw LJ performing in Brussels a few weeks ago.
It was quiet o.k. and I like his CD too. Wat was hilariuos though, is that fake ass guitar player in his band. He act's like he's Prince, when playing his guitar... the expressions on his face, the motion... just everything. After the concer, I spoke to that guy, asked him if Prince was his biggest influence, he said "Yes" I replied... obvious, but you're immitating him badly on stage then he took off and started to chat with some gold digger-chicks on the other side of the stage... Just for that guy, you should have a peek at JL's coming live DVD Here he is: Picture added edit [Edited 11/4/05 7:17am] The man of science has learned to believe in justification, not by faith, but by verification - Thomas Henry Huxley

Legend is a talented vocalist and pianist and is a refreshing R&B artist, especially during these times when R&B artists wish they were hip hop star.
But, his songwriting ain't all that great and I felt Kanye West's production on the record was a bit heavy-handed. IMHO, thouh.

You insult a man right after he gets off stage (and YES its an insult to tell someone they are imitating ANYONE badly) and what'd you expect? Surely you didn't think he'd hang around you and let you take a few more pot shots at him as opposed to receiving a lil' positive attention from a female, did you? At least the brotha's workin'. So many musicians aren't these days. You can always spot the big Prince fans at other peoples' shows because they always figure out a way to work Prince's name in a convo. [Edited 11/5/05 6:51am]
