Yummy. Good choice for a first Bowie album. If you're enjoying his whole glam vibe, I'd recommend Aladdin Sane next...it's a pretty logical progression. And if you like THAT (and I don't know why you wouldn't, there are some killer songs on there), then you should pick up the Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture DVD or soundtrack CD, which is a document of his Aladdin Sane tour where he "kills" the character of Ziggy Stardust. Very glam, very melodramatic, very fun.

You started at one of the best. Ride with that for awhile, he probably doesn't have another album as instantly listenable as Ziggy.

i will grant you, though, that he DOES have a few albums that are "difficult" at first but pay off with a bit of patience and repeated listenings.

Hunky Dory is probably my favorite. Much better than Aladdin Sane IMO, though Aladdin Sane is a continuation of the Ziggy vibe. Hunky Dory comes before Ziggy and it's independently great.

i agree, though when i got into bowie, i dove into as much of it as i could get my grubby little hands on. it took years for me to process it all, but it was such a rush discovering all his classic albums from the 70s over the course of one summer.

if you want to read a really fun david bowie biography that does a GREAT job of analyzing his music in a really interesting way, you should look for a copy of "to major tom" by dave thompson - it's actually a novel about a fan who writes letters to bowie over the years, but the author clearly has an amazing knowledge of bowie's career, and it's every bit as much an education of bowie's musical history from the beginning up to the 'hours' album as it is a really fun novel. i'd recommend it above most non-fiction bowie bios, to be honest.

Ziggy Stardust is the perfect album to start with. It will always be his calling card and you just cannot go wrong with it. Like Prince, he's best absorbed in stages and especially in order. I'd go with Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane next to round out that period before you move on. Enjoy!
