I thought I couldn't stand her until that came out. As long as she sings in Spanish, I'm a lot more likely to like it. "No" was good too.

Her singing voice is more folkloric, and is very reminiscent of vocal styles you find in older music from Mexico, or Columbian folk music. Her timbre is little bit like an OOOOOLLLLLD lady, almost like she's channeling a 60 year old Mariachi singer...I think because it's so "rootsy" it sounds kind of weird to American ears....but since I like some of the older Central and South American roots music from the 50's -70's, for me her voice isn't as iritating... I think, she just sounds old for her age , you know, one of those old souls walking around in a young person's body, singin' like somebody's grandmama, but just in a different cultural style cool

I liked Shakira when she was pre-international pop stardom: I liked her South American acoustic & rock chick stuff (the rock scene is SO vibrant in S.America, LOVE IT). She's a good songwriter, a decent guitar player and is a good mixture of "clever" and "intelligent"....the first foray into the pop machine with the blond hair didn't do much for me...but as she's getting older, she seems to be getting back something that was missing from her earlier days, just with an ability to communicate in English and, and being at home with her sexuality and prettiness (the old skool Shakira was always so COVERED and dressed in dark colors, kind of like the old Alanis Morrisette from Jagged Little Pill)... now on the doorstep of becoming 30 ,she looks very comfortable in her skin and comfortable with what she's creating musically, so I say more power to her...

The funniest thing is that my 60 year old mid-western mom LOVES her! I almost fell out of my chair when she told me that this weekend!

Oh yeah, see that sounds normal to me too. Like Chavela Vargas, or Lola Beltran for a smoother version. nod

Doesn't get me excited. Which is pretty much the only function a female pop singer would have for me, so there. I don't care for it personally.

I agree about the frog thing. It's like a frog yodeling or something. disbelief It just annoys the hell out of me.

I don't like her music either. I remember a while back I was shopping at a clothes shop in Den Haag, and they happened to be playing some Shakira song. At first I thought it would only be the one song, but they played the entire thing. ill After about 5 songs, it drove me out of the store. I'm not even kidding. lol It's just not my thing at all.

She is hot though, I'll give her that. lol

Her music is vapid, her English singing is partly unintelligible and her caboose is too big for my liking. But she's a Woody Allen fan, so she's obviously an intelligent woman. I'd break bread with her anytime (as long as her records are not playing in the background). biggrin

I have a hard time taking seriously the intelligence of someone who slammed Madonna for being a wimp by pulling the American Life video when the greatest political statement of her own career is carving a giant peace sign on the beach in a Reebok commercial.

I'm not familiar with the ins-and-outs of Shakira's career, but I would say that if she made that statement about Madonna (who I generally like very much), I cannot argue with it. Of course Madonna was not the only one who bowed to pressure during that time, but she was one. For an artist who has always sold herself as a maverick, she sure pussied-out on that one.
