All Hail to King Fela! What about Fela Kuti, the african King of Funk? I got really heavy into his stuff a few years ago and I recommend anybody who digs Prince to listen hard to Fela. Especially James Brown Fans are usually very surprised how much fela's drummer tony allen influenced clyde stubblefield and jabo starks. fela's records are hard to find, but most have been reissued on CD. every cut is about 10-25 minutes long, so I guess you can say that with about 70 albums Fela didnt record as many songs as Prince, but the songs he did are STRONG. my favorite albums are "expensive shit" (inspired by a police razzia at felas house in lagos. he got arrested and waited for him to drop some proof that he was very stoned) and "Live at kalakuta republic".
In the concerts Fela would pass out joints to the audience (everybody would get one of those huge spliffs. fela had about 5 people hired to roll them for him and the fans). unfortunately Fela died in August 1997 of Aids (he had 26 legal women, I dont know how many non-legal ones). His sone Femi carries on the legacy, but he is somewhat mellow and quiet compared to the soul of Fela. "Peace and Benz -- The future, made in Germany" ![]() | |
