Why have blacks disowned the electric guitar?

I was listening to the albums "Graham Central Station" by Graham Central Station, "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On" by Funkadelic and "Fire" by The Ohio Players and it always amazes me how they so seemlessly mixed rock and the electric guitar into their music. Its so common to listen to a lot of music from the 70's and hear acoustic and or electric guitar all on "black artists" music back then. When and why have blacks basically abandoned the electric guitar and relegated it to being for "white music?"

I wouldn't say disowned, but if there has been a decline, this may be one reason:

Perfect example right there. It's a damn shame too. I'm praying that a Black rock band gets big real soon. That would so make my day if and when that happens. We are so much more than hip-hop and we need something different to break up what's up now.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The thing is, new technology has taken its toll across the board. There are fewer guitarists, period.

Fruity Loops is killing musicianship.

We've already been through this. The conclusion is most black folks want it melodic and down in the mix, not up front and loud like in a lead. Us freaks that listened to Zep Yes and old Funkadelic prolly think we're white anyways. lol

This has been so way before hiphop. If anything rap&rock has worked more to the opposite effect and brought more blacks into those type of bands.

Which is really ironic, because a lot of the innovators of the loud, in your face guitar sound were black : think of Chuck Berry, Bo Doddley, BB King, Muddy Waters, Freddy King, Ike Turner, Buddy Guy, etc

I reject the premise that we disowned the electric guitar. There are numerous enough examples to prove the opposite to be true.

I think it's more likely the case that the many examples of black guitar-friendly acts get treated like anomalies. For every example that showed a gravitation toward turntables or a producer's workstation, there's a Prince, Fishbone, Living Colour, Seal, TTD, Jesse Johnson, Skunk Anansie, Toni Tony Tone, Mint Condition, Chuckii Booker, Joe Public, Tony Rich, Slash, Tommy Simms or Meshell Ndegeocello proving the exact opposite.

Why have white pop princesses disowned singing ability? Only Joss, Christina & Jessica are in that field of anomalies...

*sigh*

C'mon, y'all... I just got out of church... Have mercy...

It started in the late 1980s when ballads started taking over and jams took a backseat. Then hip hop took over in the 1990s and completely killed it.

well Andre3000, Van Hunt, Pharell Williams, and other artists like that are
attempting to re-own it.

There just isn't a large enough market for it right now unfortunately
so until society's tastes mature. Ciarra and Bowl Wow will reign supreme sad

Oh man. (sigh) I can say proudly and with SERIOUS conviction; Blacks haven't disowned the electric guitar. Where in the hell is Paligap with that thread?! And BlaqueKnight's thread "Everybody Hates Blackguitarist?". One of the catchiest threads I've seen on here.

personally, I'm a whitey, but most of my favorite guitar players are black, and I take great offense to people who say ignorant things about black guys not rocking out or not being able to or "there really aren't many great black guitar players" or whatever. I dig Jeff Beck, Clapton, Zappa, etc.. but I probably listen to Hendrix, Ernie Isley, Eddie Hazel and Prince a lot more, as well as all the old blues greats like B.B., Freddie and Earl King and buddy guy.

I haven't disowned it: http://www.myspace.com/jddejablue. Neither has Blackguitarist and other orgers around here. Go to a lot of churches nowadays and you'll find brothas blowin' it up in the church band. (I know, 'cause I'm one of 'em).

That's a very generalized statement.
