The guys are obviously aware that their careers as teen-idols are starting to be over. So this is what they come up with, pretty cool move. That's the type of thing they probably loved as teenagers, and since they aren't that much older than me, I can certainly see what inspired them to do this. Sure the vocals on the actual song are still sang mostly with that cheesy teen-pop tone, but I'd take it over the new The Cadonnas / The Rhythmboxes / The Rocketdocks / Insert-generic-retro-garage-rock-band-name-here -single anyday. It's sort of, well, real. In an unexpected way.

Nick Carter is looking rough these days

I hated the video for Just Want You To Know at first, and I've been a fan for 8 years. It takes an extra-special effort for a boyband fan to be embarassed by her Boys, and these 5 have done more than their fair share of stupid embarassing shit over the years. Action figures and Backstreet boxer shorts, anyone?

When AJ went into rehab it knocked some much-needed reality into the perfect teen-idol image, and popped the plastic bubble they were living in. They started to act like real human beings -and in public, even! No small feat for a group whose careers are dependent on being seen as something safe and sexless for the little girls to idolize and imagine marrying. Ironic, considering the amount of innuendo in a typical boyband song or video.

After they fell from popularity and started behaving like the young, occasionally stupid, men they are I -and I know I'm not alone on this -started to have more respect for them as people than when they hid under the squeaky-clean, freshly scrubbed golden boy image. Now that I've got a bit more maturity than I did when my 12 year old self first became a fan, and I'm at a time when most of the fans have since jumped ship, it's kind of nice and even reassuring to know that they have flaws; to finally be allowed to see the men behind the curtain. Not that we should know every detail of their lives (and Good God, seeing Nick fingerfucking Paris Hilton was NOT on my to-do list ) but after years of sugar-coated artifice, it's refreshing to see how human they are.

The video's since grown on me. It has a homemade look to it, and even that is a nice change in this age of million dollar over-produced videos. Hell, even their own video for Larger Than Life set a new record for most expensive music video. It's got a cute twist to it too. The Boys are not only the mullet-sporting fans, but when they finally get to the show, they're also the band! It's pretty obvious they had a lot of fun making this one, even if I'm sure the others sold Kevin's stash to fund it.

I'm definitely a fan of the butt jokes (the two bands featured are Sphincter and Tukkhus) and the puking girl in the parking lot. They were a classy touch. Definitely not things that normally make appearances in boyband videos.

My one question: Why is AJ's 69 tattoo covered up with makeup? Do they think people didn't have ink on their stomachs in the 80's?

That video is a highlight of this year. No one these days would dare to make a cheap cool video like that

I actually like the song as well, maybe it's because of the video, but it's one of my favourite mainstream pop/rock single releases this year alongside with The White Stripes' "Blue Orchid" and The Foo Fighters' "Best Of You". None of these are my favourite groups - not by a longshot - and I would publicly admit to liking only The White Stripes to a degree. But I mean there has been some quite weak singles this year, i.e. the Gwen Stefani tracks did nothing to me and the new Pharrell is just a plain bore.

Okay, go ahead. That is a goofy video. And disturbingly erotic given the fact that 2 of them were minors at the time.

I was disappointed to find out that only 1 song out of the entire album had any songwriting or production credits for the Boys. It's a huge step back from their last album, that featured over half the songs written and produced by them.


On the plus side, Kevin was on piano on the title track, and in concert a few of them have been picking up instruments. They're no great musicians, but they make a decent go of it and aren't unpleasant to hear on instruments. I hope they keep doing that. Maybe even incorporate their own playing into more than just a few songs per show. I'd be impressed, at least. It takes a lot of hard work for any pop act to break away from their image, and if they're willing to try, good for them.
