Confessions of a Madonna Fan

So, i was thinking the other day that my excitement for her album is unprecedented for me. That I am prepared to get her new one the day (or evening) it comes out...get the vinyl version too. When did my fandom change as I was not really a fan of the last album nor the one before...though I suppose I liked them somewhat at the time.

Then I realized that I bought AL the day it came out. Bought Music the week it came out...same with Ray of Light. Got Bedtime Stories once I found out she had a new one out...Everyone knew about Erotica. In fact since True Blue, I have gotten each of her albums within the first month of them coming out...save for the Dick Tracy Soundtrack.

I own quite a few 45's (including the Blue True Blue), varied 12" and the damn Like a Prayer cassette that STILL smells like potchuli (that I refuse to get rid of).

SHe has actually been a big part of my life without me actively seeking her out. Dancing to her music in the clubs (and enduring the occasional Madonna Megamix...who hasn't?). She was a gay icon (still is) that many of my friends and me identified with as we were coming out...ala Truth or Dare...and we ALL vogued! Dating someone who was a fanatic and seeing all of her big assed posters that exist (you know the ones) lined up wallpaper-like that wrapped around his entire apt. To the crazy Vanity Fair magazine (for some reason I cut up). To the several stories I have heard about Maverick Jackets.

So I am now realizing how much she is a part of my life...albeit a small part, but a very important part and is interwoven into the fabric of my being. She is part of me.

Thank you Madonna.

Maddy is on it. that's the reason it became a success and according to different biographiers that was when the club DJ's made the transition from playing Madonna records in clubs based on the Producer to Playing a Madonna record because it was a Madonna record.

One of the thing I love about her NOW. Is that she come from nothing and made it on her own. She had a vision and never let go of that vision. Many of us know about her famous speech she gave Dick Clark. She created herself into an ICON. I don't know if she ever saw herself being as big as she is now, but she had gumption which back int he day was equal to $$$ that will get you in the front door now.

I actually think the ones where people start up a whole thread against someone...yet all they can muster up is a big ol "this artist stinks just because I say so" without any thought or reasoning to back it up are the worst.

I was watching TV when the Lucky Star video played over and over and then later, Like a Virgin. Never really cared for her but she was there.

Then in college I was deep into feminist studies and took a year off to travel. I visited my other deep-in-feminist-studies friend Jeanne who was studying abroad in Jerusalem, Israel. So we're sitting at a bar in the daytime in Jerusalem of all places. There is a Madonna concert playing on the TV. The concert where she wears coned boobs and masturbates on stage. We were casually glancing at it and as time wore on, Jeanne and I both had an epiphany that Madonna was a strong, powerful, intelligent performer. We instantly became fans.

From then on, I didn't pay much attention to her music but she was always a role model -- a kind of shining light that would lead me to success and freedom. I saw Desperately Seeking Susan, saw Truth or Dare. These were important.

Then last year, my boyfriend dragged me to one of her concerts. And with the help of the org, my fandom blossomed.

That's my confession. redface

I read madonna had something to prove which is why she got into music. Which is odd as she became one of the biggest artists of all time. What iam saying is, she seemed not hell bent on creating artisic music but just did what she wanted to do and stuffed the snobby critics. Yet now even the snobbiest of critics gives her props. And props to her for that.

Yeah I surprised myself with saying something positive about madonna. I like her in many ways (great role model for girls and women etc...), so she ain't all bad then

You might like Erotica. It's very early 90's.

He may find it too gay though.

I agree with this. She has done a lot of good for women in general. She's also a good role model of sorts for gay men. She helped give a good light on us during the AIDS "crisis" of the late 80's and early 90's. I think she more or less brought gay to the mainstream...or helped to.

I suppose that when you are as big as she is anything you decide to make your cause be it womens sexuality, gay rights, religion it's bound to make people notice.

And at the same time..she has this normalcy/down to earthness about her you know? It's probably because she's from the midwest.

The album as a whole is really good. Quite diverse, actually. Erotica, while I like it, did have a drum pattern that was getting to be tired even before it came out.

Hmmmm, i always see it (of course u would do, she lives in second hand stores too), so i might pick it up one day (honestly). What song did "hanky panky" come from? Was that on the dick tracy soundtrack? Wow, madonna does a novelty song, i guess no madonna fan likes that song. I find it amusing....
