The Ultimate Rap Battle Hammer vs Nas

Who has more skills on the mike? I know most people would say Nas but I prefer Hammer! Nas is too serious for me.

"The Ultimate Rap Battle"... hmm

I'd say it more like a preliminary qualifying round for an American Rap Idol contest. A mis-match at that too, coz Mr. Jones would just mash up Stanley.

When you say battle, do mean like how they battle in the movie 8 Mile? Cause if you do, Hammer wouild'nt have a chance. He provides NAS with too much material to cap on him with. What could Hammer really say about Nas?

It would be interesting to see them battle in an 8 Mile way. You never know Hammer might hav more skills on the mike than you think.

Maybe I should have said Hammer vs Kanye West since they both do god rap! biggrin

Thats true. I never seen nas freestyle.

Outside freestyle u guys know I love the hammer. U better pray 'cause u know u cant touch this. Hammers flow got better and better on each album. By "pumps and a bump" and "dont stop" etc... he was pretty good, clear and quite fast.

Hammer really was one of a kind, sorta like nas i guess.

Actually, I do remember reading somewhere that Nas doesn't freestyle. He's more of a poet and writes everything in a journal. But, even if that's true, it doesn't matter. Nas absolutely kills Hammer as an MC. I think everyone here knows this, but just in case you don't, here's an example. Two artists, one message: "I'm the best."

Excerpt from MC Hammer "Too Legit To Quit"

Too legit... Too legit to quit (three times)
Sweat running all over my chest (chest) I don't quit no!
I just press harder (Yea!) than I ever did before going for
The dreams that I have in store in my mind (mind) and I know
That i'm makin it I gotta get mine and nobody's takin it away
(No!) cause hammer don't play that you try to get mine
boy you better step back freeze (freeze) cause
You don't want none I hustle for my muscle and you look
Weak son (real weak) yea!... i'm goin for all that I can get
Kickin at the top cause i'm too legit to quit...sing!..

when I feel high post don't you play me close a dig 'em smack
a get you back and i'll hit with a dose of oaktown power
and charge you by the hour i'm shakin like a quake and funks
get devoured I choose to abuse, misuse and confuse
competitors who think they're makin up all the rules, fools
in the game lame and insane it's a shame I gotta do this but
i remain the same unchanged gettin better never known
as a sweater kickin it at the top cause I got myself together
so roll with a guy who's physical and fit knows the time
and too legit to quit...sang!

Excerpt from Nas "It Aint Hard to Tell"

It ain't hard to tell, I excel, then prevail
The mic is contacted, I attract clientele
My mic check is life or death, breathin a sniper's breath
I exhale the yellow smoke of buddha through righteous steps
Deep like The Shinin', sparkle like a diamond
Sneak a uzi on the island in my army jacket linin
Hit the Earth like a comet, invasion
Nas is like the Afrocentric Asian, half-man, half-amazin
Cause in my physical, I can express through song
Delete stress like Motrin, then extend strong
I drank Moet with Medusa, give her shotguns in hell
From the spliff that I lift and inhale, it ain't hard to tell

The buddha monk's in your trunk, turn the bass up
Not stories by Aesop, place your loot up, parties I shoot up
Nas, I analyze, drop a jew-el, inhale from the L
School a fool well, you feel it like braille
It ain't hard to tell, I kick a skill like Shaquille holds a pill
Vocabulary spills I'm +Ill+
plus +Matic+, I freak beats slam it like Iron Shiek
Jam like a tech with correct techniques
So analyze me, surprise me, but can't magmatize me
Scannin while you're plannin ways to sabotage me
I leave em froze like her-on in your nose
Nas'll rock well, it ain't hard to tell

Umm...yeah. I must be bored to have actually done this. I'm going to go to sleep now. lol

So hammer is simplistic lyrically. Its the message that counts for me. Infact, the actual pulsating, "weight lifting good" rhythm off "too legit to quit" on the verses, makes for an original sounding rap verse.

I can see a few duff lines on nas' rhymes on the song u picked bytheway. I know hammer got some too, but that example u picked is hardly trendsetting stuff.

Funnily enough i was hanging with my mate today and he loves nas.

You don't have to admit Nas is better than MC Hammer. Some people like to play Devil's advocate until the point that it's silly so it's pointless to get into discussions with them. However, I guess I have to clarify why I posted those two excerpts since you're confused about it. I didn't post the Nas excerpt because I thought it was trendsetting, I posted it because I thought the message was comparable to the Hammer excerpt. The point I was trying to make was not that Nas is trendsetting and Hammer isn't, but that Nas is 10X more interesting. No, Nas isn't perfect. But, he's closer to it than Hammer--that's for sure.

Oh i know people like cinistercee were playing devil's advocate (i know he hates hammer) and I listened to nas today and can tell that his flow is strong, his voice original (not trying to sound like anyone else) but iam not a big rap fan and people on here know that. So i guess my point is irrelevant on here anyway. If we were on a hiphop board, i would be flamed by now, but people on here are good about it.

i do stand by the fact that

a) hammer didn't blatently copy run dmc like ll cool j etc.. did for years on after, he also didn't copy ice t lyrically or 2 live crew...he did his own thing.

b) hammers rhymes were centered on pop verses and not rap ones, thus his rap again did not sound like weak versions of run dmc etc...

c) hammer was the first true pop rapper. Unfortunately, as he is pop rap, hiphop snobs hate this thus hate 'ole sellout hammer as he liked to sample alot (like hiphop before hadn't done that before hammer went global)

d) hammer is positive, something most rap never is (and i do love 2 live crew so i dont jusr listen to positive shit either)

Hammer mixed pop verses, structures or whatever pop was back then, into rap. He wasn't newjack either, though his dancing sure was lol

Tone loc and young mc sound so dated next to hammer.

Fuck it hammer was a rap pioneer for many reasons outside who has the best lines.....
