The Emperor's New Clothes Who have yall heard that just really sucks, but the world won't acknowledge it? I feel like there are a lot of people in the industry that really don't belong and I'll say this cause it's the Prince board and I know yall are hip to what it is. Talent is talent. Singers are singers and writers are writers and that's why singer/songwriters are a big deal. But people like Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joe Cocker, Kiss, Tom Petty, Mick Jagger and Macy Gray should never touch a microphone, let alone get paid for it. If you wanna argue that they're incredible writers, so is Diane Warren, but you don't see her up on VH-1 honors soundin like asscheese. Once people reach a certain legendary status, they seem above reproach and the general public has bought the hype to the point where they'll defend these artists to the last, but honesty is the best policy. If you sing like shit, stop singin.

I like a lot of artists that have weird, annoying, or crappy singing voices. If the music's good, I don't mind so much. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Well , to each their own i guess , i like his singing I gotta believe you like his music. Cause if you take any Rolling Stones song a capella and listen to it, I guarantee it's nothin to smile about. I think I really noticed it when they did a documentary on him a couple years ago and they showed him in the studio with Wyclef (another one who I forgot to put on the list) and he was recordin a song called Hideaway. You could hear him singin with his headphones on, but you couldn't hear the track and he sounded like whodunit and call the poe-leese. And it wasn't like they changed it after, that was the take that made the album. So I'm not into Jagger's singin. At all.

In a way you sound like my husband who thinks one has to have a near perfect voice to be a good singer. Personally, I think there's more to being a singer that the voice.
Take Janice Joplin, the woman had a horrible voice (IMHO), but she channeled the music. Being able to express emotion in your singing is just as important as having a technically beautiful voice. There are some singer, like Janice Joplin, who I don't listen to because of their voice, but I have GREAT admiration for them for putting it all out there and being raw in their performance. And in the end it boils down to "whatever floats your boat." Thankfully there is a variety of folks out there doing their thing. I'm firmly planted in denial

And I definitely agree that some people mean it so much that you can ignore the actual timbre of their voices. Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown (at times) all fit into that category, so I left them off my list. But Bob Dylan wouldn't scream if he sat on a Bowie knife, so not only does he sound like crap, he's monotonous and even atonal with no emotion to speak of.

Pretty voices are often pretty boring. Did you prefer Pat Boone's "Ain't That a Shame" to Fats Domino's.
Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker, Macy Gray, & Rod Stewart are good singers. Check this song out at:
