She hasn't had an good album in years, but yet this network treats her like the 2nd coming of Christ.I just don't get it.

I am still trying to figure out what's worse?? Her fake british accent or her new music??

Sorry madge fans she can never top Like a Prayer album....

Because she built that network by being the 1st mega star of the video age.

I'd like to agree with you, to say that it's out of a sense of loyalty, but I'm even happier that it's more likely because she's still hugely popular. She's a household name, she just happens to have a bunch of very vocal critics. I've never understood the line of thought that goes: "I don't like them anymore, so no one else does, either!".

No she hasn't. That's some stuff she started doing in the mid-90's.

She really has spoken that way since the beginning, especially in interviews. And it's not so much an accent as her enunciation. It got more pronounced as she went into acting, particularly around the Speed-The-Plow days. I think people are picking up on it more now because she throws British slang in there. But then, she's married to one and lives there, so....?

Been into Madonna since pre-self-titled album days.....

She has definitely spoken with different "accents" or "inflections" at various times.

It's hard to know for sure if she's doing it on purpose (i.e. affected) or just being influenced by her surroundings.

It would appear that her natural or native voice is the midwestern accent (she is from Detroit)..... which you can hear in very early interviews, and in some dialog during Truth or Dare (i.e. when she's talking to friends and family).

Even early on in interivews she sometimes "lost" the midwestern twang and spoke more "professionally".(i.e. enunciate more clearly etc.)... which anyone would do if they wre suddently on national TV.

There was a point a few years ago when she really did seem to be using a more British sounding accent (not just enunciation). Clearly this is not her natural voice, but we don't know if she was doing it on purpose or just picking up on how her neighors in England spoke (some people tend to do that and mimic unconsicously). Personally, I think at that time she was doing it on purpose as an affectation.

I think she's gotten a lot of flack for it so it would make sense she'd pull back a little now. OF course maybe she's spending less time in England now, I don't really know.

Bototm line: She definitely has NOT spoken the sam throughout her career, but the only person who knows for sure why is herself.

PS. My personal opionion on Tina TUrner is taht en she won all the awards back in 1985.... she was so shocked and grateful to be on top after the hell she went through. And given her background, growing up in the south, poor etc..... my guess is she was trying to "over-compensate" for her Southern accent and try to sound more "classy" so she came off sounding a bit strange lke she was using a British accentt.... but I think her intent was different.

Tina has said she's always wanted to live in Europe. She even dreamt of it as a child.

I believe she does now (in Switzerland)... but at the time she had only recently started hanging in Europe to do that album. I htink that AMA or Grammy show in 85 is what most people thing of when they mention this about Tina.... and I think it was really her trying to be gracious and appear ""formal" or "eucated". I thought it was weird but kind of endearing.

Madonna's I suspect is more of an affectation which has backfired on her.

For some reason my post went blank.

so I will say again.

Madonna is a media-whore and MTV is her pimp.

MTV is largely responsible for the downfall of complex thought-provoking popular music.

Thier ass-kissing is a symptom of the disease.

Isn't Janet Jackson was the best video artist of all time?

I think you mean Michael Jackson.

And MTV supports Madonna because she is the mother of MTV and it would be backstabbing the woman who helped MTV stay on the air by not helping her out.

Madonna does MTV favors and they return them. It's always been a love relationship between them
.

nod Correct! Madonna & MTV has maintain a respectable loving business relationship since 1984.

Even if Madonna release an album that sells poorly, her videos will get airplay on MTV2.

Totally agree. Athough i love Madonna to bits, Duran Duran did more for MTV than her. Duran Duran were the innovators of the music video. So why can't MTV do them the same favours?

Well, Madonna had a lot more out put over Duran Duran. Hell, after Wild Boys in 1985/86...what else did they put out that helped MTV? Certainly by the time Notorious and Big Thing came about they were no longer in the spotlight.

Meanwhile Madonna has had numerous videos and events...hck her videos became events. Madonna has done more for MTV than just her videos.

Duran Duran was instrumental in the beginning...but Madonna has helped them throughout. Also Madonna is still at her game, whereas Duran Duran is considered more of a nostalgia band with an occasional hit these days...even though they have never "broke up" or "went away" and have had an album at least once avery 3-4 years or so.

Duran and instrumental band? I think not! Were did u get that from? Duffy (i think thats his name) use to be the singer but he left so they auditioned for other singers and Simon le bon got it because he was a natural. he started his early career as an actor.
Yes Duran did stop after wild boys/notorious. Its because they split up! and people did lose interest in them, including their fans.
But i was talking about in the 80's and what Duran did for MTV.
Werent they the first to have these extravagent videos, where as much effort was put into the videos as much as the single?
Werent they the first big pop act to have their video banned?(Girls on film-1981).
While Duran and Prince were being controversal and hitting the charts and the airwaves, Madonna was still stuggling to make it. Madonna wasnt the first and Duran have nevered followed her they had there own creative ideas. If anything she followed them 10 years later(N.B the sex book etc in 1991/2).
Duran are not a 'nostalgia' band they do have new material, they have always been creative and new just like Madonna, and this is the point i trying to make why cant MTV do them some favours for them aswell. Their is room for all of these artist.
i havnt come here to have a go at Madonna because i thinks she is brilliant. She is one of my favourite artist, she is always new and fresh and creative and the music world and MTV would be shit place without her. Madonna rocks!
Her new single is brilliant and i cant wait to hear her album. The girl cant do no wrong.

um, skipping all the other stuff here, madonna's "accent", while very put on, has been with her since at least the erotica era. maybe even as far back as her interviews during blonde ambition but i'm not sure on that one. i just watched one of my madonna comp videotapes the other day and, low and behold, there is an interview from the girlie show tour and she is speaking with a british accent. that was 1993. check your facts, home slice. lol

Like I've said all along!

I love Duran Duran, but honestly,I can't recall too many of their videos.I would argue that Madonna has done more outstanding videos than any other artist.Beginning with "Material Girl" in 1985,her videos were very high-quality,provocative and exciting.Remember "Papa Don't Preach","Like A Prayer" and "Vogue"? In the 80s,a new Madonna video was an EVENT.And no disrepect to Duran Duran, but they faded away rather quickly.By the late 80s,they were struggling to stay relevent while Maddy was still topping the charts and releasing one excellent video after another. In many ways,Madonna defined the 80s MTV era more than anyone else, with the possible exception of Michael Jackson.

shake Hells no. Madonna tops her absolutely.

However I do feel that Bjork's body of video far surpasses Madonnas in a lot of ways. IMO.

Yeah, I'd probably have to agree with you. Bjork is the best. Madonna is the greatest.
