I get the distinct feeling this is going to be a part of her act for the upcoming album. The whole "confessions" thing seems to be played up (I mean, c'mon, she has a hotline for calling your confessions in?). I get the feeling she is mocking her own deification by fans and the media. It just seems rather tongue-in-cheek to me. Time will tell.

When I was watching the preview she seemed to be talking about the Bible. I don't think this was her own opinion. The "material" thing was her opinion though and she's been saying the same thing since the 80's. Nothing new.

in the new documentary, "i'm going to tell you a secret," madonna tells us people "are going to Hell if they don't turn from their wicked behaviour." she goes on to inform us she has turned from "the material world. the physical world. the world of illusion, that we think is real. we live for it, we're enslaved by it and it ultimately will be our undoing."

with comments like this, madonna is not only living in her own world but she is also going to be responsible for her own commercial undoing. shrug

(though, honestly, i agree with all of the comments she's made)

Erm i dont think she was seperating herself from the masses here. She's fully admitted to being caught up by materialism and its trappings for most of her life. Just because someone makes a realisation and talks about it doesn't necessarily mean they change their ways and mindset overnight.

I think she's referring more to the fact that material things do not bring happinness and fulfillment in life and that something more is needed. Accepting this does not mean you have to shun material things. Madonna's having a career just like the rest of us. Shes not the type of character to sit back on her fortune. In a way having the fortune makes her better placed to make such a comment.

I read in her spread with Vogue a few months back that her children have never seen t.v. I can imagine why! But those kids are going to grow into teenagers one day and they are in for a big surprise about their Mom. I would not want to be in her shoes when it comes time to start the explaining who she really is to a couple of teenagers.

Oh, PLEASE! What a pretentious hypocrite! And what's this bull about not letting her kids read magazines and watch TV? Her whole life has been centered on getting as much media attention as possible.

Having seen the docuementary, it's obvious that folks are blowing this way out of proportion. She was explaining the "Beast Within" video and that part about going to hell was tossed out there like a total joke. She was even laughing right after.

When you see the documentary, it'll make sense. I also found that her new beliefs and lifestyle are a lot easier to swallow and seem a lot less hypocritical in long form. You understand where she's coming from in the documentary much better than in short interviews and soundbites. I think you'll like it a lot.

she's talking about The Beast Within, and talking about how she was juxtaposing (something? she doesn't say) with telling people they're going to hell for their wicked ways (in the Beast Within). she's not wagging her finger at anyone or even saying it herself. she's talking about a bible verse.

i think kaballah is very interesting and not so "crazy." i've read several books and, as a philosophy, it has a lot to offer. madonna doesn't do too good of a job as its spokesperson, though. lol

i hate to admit it, but i was really impressed with it myself.

well, i really don't hate admitting it, but i never thought i'd enjoy something by madonna again, and i'll be damned if i didn't have a good time. it could have been edited down a LOT, but the indulgences really didn't bother me that much.

i think i'm still in the "how can a mega-celebrity preach humility and non-materialism" camp, but i do think she kicked around some interesting and genuinely provocative thoughts on spirituality in the documentary. good for her.

ok, I finally watched it, and I'm going to tell you a secret:

Madonna is Miss Jean Brodie.

Seriously, it was sort of hard to tell what the "going to hell" comment was about. She did say something about "juxtaposing", but who knows. There was also a part where she talked about "fornication" as being something bad. But I also liked a lot of it, especially the performance clips--that rockin' version of American Life actually put the song over for me. I mean, I still think she's pretty much a hypocrite and a gasbag, but she's also still a phenomenal artist (hmm...what other artist does that remind me of?) and at the end of the day, that's all that matters to me.

well, the part of the documentary that i'm still chewing on is the suggestion that metaphor is part of the "magic" of her spirituality/belief system. so, when she says "fornication", she may not mean the literal definition but rather a meaning that fits her thoughts. or not. shrug

the "everyone's going to hell" comment was blown WAY out of proportion, by the way. she just said it off-handedly during a discussion with her musical director/producer which was actually kind of charmingly casual. to believe all the stories about this comment, you'd think she was addressing the masses on the steps of the vatican or something. rolleyes
