Personally, I really like them. They aren't everyone's cuppa tea, but that's cool.
I really don't get the comparisons to U2, REM or Radiohead. To me, they sound nothing like any of those bands. I think some of the comments Chris Martin has made lately have been a kind of sarcastic nod to the U2 comparisons. Hmm...all of them English pop rock bands have that grand, sweeping and anthemic sound to me. Thank the Beatles, I guess.

Hmm...all of them English pop rock bands have that grand, sweeping and anthemic sound to me. Thank the Beatles, I guess. Well, REM isn't British, so they don't apply to that theory. These bands may have an "anthemic" sound, but that doesn't mean they sound the same. i think because chris martin kind of has that cracky whiney emo-ish vocal style, he gets compared to thom yorke a lot, and because coldplay's sound is pretty much alternative-lite arena rock with occasional flourishes of electronic sounds mixed in now and then, they get the comparisons to radiohead.
coldplay is, of course, neither as risk-taking or as nuanced as radiohead at their most indulgent.

I said all them "English" bands. I guess you're now going to say U2 isn't English, they're Irish.
And believe me, after living in London for 6 months, all of them bands started sounding the same to me. Big choruses along with mighty hooks are really big in Brit-pop. And the English bands mentioned have at one time or another, employed those musical devices.

here's my thing.. I dont think they are on a path, or were to "copy" radiohead.. the obvious inspirations were there.. not doubt (a la The Bends) but for the most part.. Parachutes just had good songs on it..
I dont for a minute believe that A Rush Of Blood To The Head was meant to follow tracks of anyone.. and I believe they accomplished a wonderful album when they recorded this.. "Polotik" & "Amsterdamn" are among my all time favorite songs.. I'm not keen on their singles, but songs like these is what makes me love their music... I think the new album is good also..but I do agree it is following a simular path as their other work.. For the most part, yeah, I dig them.. Its hard now to find something as good as they are in the limelight.. I listen to probably 30 indie artists that smoke anything on the radio these days.. I just think coldplay was lucky in their stardome.

coldplay is, of course, neither as risk-taking or as nuanced as radiohead at their most indulgent. Agreed. I do, however beleive the songs I mentioned above are among the best they have.. and polotik, to me, is an edgy experimental song. perhaps the energy..whatever it is.. it runs chills up my spine.

I'm thankful for this thread.
I'm tired of people hearing the latest Coldplay single and acting all "OMG SO BEAUTIFUL BEST SONG EVAR!!" over it. They do have a few beautiful songs here and there, but for the most part they're manipulative, derivative, repetitive and hokey. Radiohead said it best about Coldplay; "Lifetime" music. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

They're the new Moby. You will hear them in trailers for movies, commercials and elevators.
Safe, boring, pretentious. Listening to their music makes me VERY aggressive. They are like the Robbie Williams for pretentious wanna-be's. I tried, Christopher, I tried. I could only respect Chris Martin a lilttle again if he dumps Gwyneth and makes a baby with Angelina Jolie that they will name Pear.

to all the haters! Coldplay is boring, boring, Chris Martin is as annoying as a mosquito buzzing. right back at ya "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

SassyBritches said: and i dislike chris martin even more, lol! i know they have a lot of fans and i even like one or two songs but they realkly are a bunch of unoriginal guys.
first they wanted to be radiohead but they realized that couldn't happen. then they went through some kind of rem phase. now chris thinks he is bono. taking on the same causes (which, in the end, is actually a great thing because support is support, no?) and making comments like "all we want to do is make great music and blow u2 out of the water," is he really that dumb? the latest round of chris's i-must-be-as-cool-as-bono phase is the following, from yahoo newswire, "Coldplay singer outbids Bono in auction for REM lunchbox. NEW YORK, NY Wednesday Oct.19.2005 /netmusiccountdown.com/ -- Coldplay's Chris Martin faced off against U2's Bono last Sunday (October 16th), but it was all in the name of love and charity." i suppose what could be better than trying to be rem or u2? trying to incorporate rem AND u2 into a pathetic game of wannabe/ I can't stand Coldplay, bar that song with the backwards going video. Chris Martin's ok though - he's the only rock star who's bothered highlighting Haiti's ongoing desperate plight in the media though his Make Trade Fair work. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently
