Galactic Cowboys / Kings X / Warrior Soul

Late 80's / early 90's progressive metal bands. Warrior Soul being a more political band. Anyone dig these bands?

All of these bands were cool, but King's X is my fave. They've survived hair metal, grunge, nu-metal, and they still sound amazing. The new version of"Goldilox" is cool. The mainstream never got hip to them (which is probably a good thing). The new CD "Ogre Tones" is great. Dug's sideproject "Poundhound" is pretty funky too.

Warror Soul were amazing - so were The Space Age Playboys too. Followed Warrior Sould right from the very off back in 1990, and saw them many many times, even partied with Kory and Pete once too which was uhh...memorable. That happened maninly because I saw the opportunity to mention to Kory while at the bar post-show that the original drummer from my friends band Killing Joke (Paul Ferguson) drummed on their first album, and therefore, he should buy me a drink. Which he f*ckin' did! lol

Kings X were good, but for some reason I could never quite 'go' with it. I don't know why as I do know that they were pretty special in their own way. There was one song of theirs however that I did think was pretty damned cool, but not being a fan, I have no idea what it was.

For me, the nineties were a damned awful period for most music, but I have to say that rock music in general was never stronger. I have so many good memories of the nineties because of that.

Kyuss (partied with them many MANY times! sadly missed)

Corrosion of Conformity

Soundgarden

Saigon Kick (SO damned underrated it still makes my heart bleed to this day - If you can find their first (eponymous) album on eBay, then grab it. It's kinda like a hybrid of metal, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Guns 'n' Roses (when they were good), amazing harmonies that show Extreme up for the losers they were, and even a number of Prince references thrown into the lyrics too)

Stabbing Westward (again - a sadly underrated band, their 'Whither, Blister, Burn & Peel' album is immense)

Queensrÿche

White Zombie (saw these guys at The Marquee in London back in 1992)

HelmeT (these guys were f*cking amazing!)

Pitchshifter,

Pist-On,

Badlands (their first album still sounds relevant even today)

I could go on and on...

*can't forget HelmeT edit!

doh!

First time alot of these bands have been mentioned on here thumbs up!

especially Badlands. former Ozzy guitarist Jake Lee fronted that group.I also like BLS with former Ozzy guitarist Zakk Wylde.

Corrosion of Conformity - deliverance was my favorite album from them in the 90's. Bluesy metal. That album rules. Dance of the Dead from Blind might be a Metallica rip off, but it's probablly gonna make my favorite songs list.

I love Helmet, Betty and Meantime, Wilma's Rainvbow is such a great song.

Soundgarden mos def

Kyuss - Sky Valley is not my cup of tea, but it is certainly different. I still have my copy of Sky Valley though.

Lost my Saigon Kick cassete, forget how they sounded.

Warrior Soul were definitely on some next level shit.

You know Killing Joke eek I love that band.

Complication and Eighties are like the best songs ever.

lol Yeah, I do. I essentially grew up with the Coleman's and am pretty much considered 'family.' (Jaz's words - not mine!) Their mid-eighties stuff from Nighttime through Outisde The Gate does little for me. Although Love Like Blood, how could you ever knock it? I prefer their real early stuff (1st album through to the awesome 'Firedances' (a NASTY album!) then they really picked up the mantle and ran with it from 'Extremeties..' onwards. I really like the new stuff, they sound urgent again, which is just as it should be. Last time I saw them was supporting Motley Crue *ahem* a few months ago playing a cavernous Wembley Arena in London. That was interesting (Have an abiding memory of Jaz stopping 'Asteroid' and leaning over towards the audience as if to confide something and stating: 'We're not doing this for the money...honest' before launching into it again with a wry smile on his mug. lol Kerrang Lifetime Acheievement Award presented to them this year, and new music currently being worked on...

Kyuss... where to start?!? music I really rate 'Sky Valley' - the production on it is exemplary. ('Supa Scoopa & Mighty Scoop', and '100 degress' kick my ass everytime I hear 'em) My favourite Kyuss album will always be 'Blues For The Red Sun'. Nothing can touch this album, it's totally out there on it's own. I noticed you hadn't mentioned this album, but I'm sure you've heard it - if not, DO get it! 'Sky Valley' was a progression onwards, the next album ('...And The Circus Leaves Town') is still essentially Kyuss, but it's not as deep as the previous two - they're more structured soinding songs (albeit ala Kyuss!) M good buddy Sean and I went to see them whenever they came over, and got really friendly with Alfredo the drummer so would always hang out afterwards and party.

My only regret from all of these times partying with Warrior Soul, Pantera, Kyuss, Soundgarden, White Zombie etc is that neither of us took any photos or nothin' sad I guess we were just too busy getting loaded lol Oh well, the memories are still good for the occasional dust-off and giggle I suppose! big grin

Check out John Garcia's side band Unida: 'Coping With The Urban Coyote' and his latest stuff with his new band Hermano: 'Dare I Say' (one of the best albums I've heard this year)

Someone made a cassete with songs from that album and I had read Martin Popoff's review of it. It's to dirgy, sludgy and bottom-heavy for me though.

I used to love C.O.C. nod I really only listened to them in the 80s though. I saw them at First Ave. probably around '87 sometime. Never got into them in the 90s.

I had this on the back of one of my jackets I remember. lol
I like this album and also Animosity by them.

And I totally forgot about White Zombie. doh! I need to track down this album again.

King's X, collectively and individualy, have been mentioned a number of times within posts here.
Doug Pinnick (favorite bassists, favorite rock vocalist)
Ty Tabor (favorite guitarist)

I've only got...

...Gretchen Goes to Nebraska, but i've heard more of their material.

They've managed to combine sophisticated hard rock tunes with ethereal ballads full of great vocal harmonies.

An inventive and musically textured sound from just a three piece band.

Yeah, I had Animosity, was cool. Got into them when 'Blind' came out in '91 and saw them supporting Soundgarden in the tiniest shitpit you can imagine - about 150 people there, was one of the best shows I ever saw.

I used to have the album prior to 'La Sexorcisto' on vinyl... but man, does it ever suck ass lol

lol I never heard White Zombie's first album. I only used to have "La Sexorcisto". I'll take your word for it though. nod

How cool though to see both Soundgarden and C.O.C. at such a small venue. Small venues are my favorite. nod

Yeah, I like huge-assed stadium shows too for the spectacle, but there's definately nothing like experiencing a sweat-dripping-off-the-celing-and-into-your-pint moment horns

I certainly have brought them up. I catch at least one of their shows in LA or Orange County when they tour and have a pretty stong collection of their albums. I strongly recommend DOGMAN, TAPEHEAD and MANIC MOONLIGHT as well as GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA . Gotta get over to KX board to find out the release date of their next record. It's supposed to be out soon.

I also have some Dug Pinnick solo sessions that are totally incredible (he plays all except drums which, btw, he actually can play). I failed to bring Dug up on the gay musician thread from last weeek cuz I thought the whole concept of making one's sexual preference known in lyrics was kind of stupid. Which seems to be how he feels about it.

Golilocks. That song is pure heaven. I'm a big fan of early King's X. I love their appearance on Dennis Miller's old show. (think I downloaded it from their website). Ty Tabor is a great guitarist. Doug's vocals are awesome, and their harmonies are a joy to listen to. Glad they're still making music.

Badlands. I love the way Jake E. Lee plays on these albums - almost like a retro, 70's type bluesy style with some shred thrown in. Ray Gillen's voice was just so freakin' powerful - I think he and Sebastian Bach (whose wife is smokin') had two of rock/metal's most powerful voices. I have all of Badlands albums, though Voodoo Highway is my fave. I love all the songs on that, including their cover of 'Fire and Rain'.

Great bands. Great music.

Their apperance on the Jon Stewart show (back in 1994) was slammin' too. They did "Dogman" and "Manic Depression". Jake E Lee is a cool player and a nice guy. I met him during a soundcheck and he let me play his white and black strat. He's a huge Hendrix and Prince fan.

Warrior Soul were the fucking bomb. My fave album of their though was Space Age Playboys which was their most straightforward album, full of terrific rock n roll. Downtown is one of my fave songs of theirs. They did reform a couple of years back but nothing materialised. I had some early Kings X albums, i know they got a new one out. My fave song of theirs is Prisoner, great melody.

I saw White Zombie live. I've been to well over 100 shows and they were in my Top 5. It was absolutely insane.

No problem Jesse, If you go to King's X site, they have it (I think) on Windows. You can download it. The new one "ORGE TONES" is great. Been listening to it nonstop.....as a matter of fact, it's on now!

Yeah Jake is cool as hell. He rapped with us for a long time and gave us picks, autographs and pictures with him. The rest of the band was cool too. Jake had these big, loudass orange Marshall cabs that sounded incredible. Ears rang for 4 days after that show. (lol)
