So, go buy it... listen to it... and comment on it here. Listened to it. And don't care to ever again. Glad I didn't buy it.

Hey, if you aren't going to buy it for yourself buy a copy for that man over at the gas station around the corner. Yu know the one. He likes good music.

A Time 2 Love is much better than any of those. It's also better than In Square Circle and Lady in Red. This album harkens back to the quality and care of his classic period, Music of My Mind through Hotter Than July. I may even like it better than everything he has done, save SITKOL, Talking Book and Innervisions (my all-time fave). In any case, it belongs in the top half if not the upper third of his work. Pretty impressive and much better than any of us had the right to ever expect again after 25 years of erratic and sporatic output.
Scott Agreed! Told you.

Only the music listeners will care that it's Bonnie Raitt on the slide, that it's Prince on the guitar, that it's McCartney on percussion, that it's EnVogue doing back up vocals, and so on and so on... None of the guest performers takes the light off of Stevie and his music. They may enhance it to a degree, but they don't steal the limelight - it was obviously not his intention. Save the rappers and the high-end guest vocals for the remixes (which I would gladly listen to also) but if he wanted Prince to sing a verse or two, I'm sure Prince would have... he obviously wanted to focus on the music, for music's sake. My - June7 I agree, and that's one of the things I love about Stevie's album. The guest artists are there, but their contributions are very subtle and low-key.And with the exception of Doug E.Fresh (who handles the beat on one track but doesn't rap here),there are no hip-hop guests on this CD.Unlike many other Old School artists who are desperate to stay relevent,Stevie doesn't waste his time with silly hip-hop experiments or any misguided attempts to update his sound. This album is pure Stevie through and through. Hi Dave! Did you like the remix version of "What The Fuss" featuring Q-Tip... I thought it was pretty cool. It didn't lose the flavor, and was mixed to hit the hip-hop airwaves. Your thoughts? |

Kool and the Gange are a third rate. I know they did some good stuff early on (and I like some of it) but they are a third rate funk band. If you can't name many others that are more innovative and better than them, than you're the one that doesn't know your shit.

I'll take your word for it... surely you have a greatest hit collection by them, no? and your judgment on them is certainly more important than the one of James Brown... what he knows about funk anyway... and if you can't see that AT2L is Stevies best work at least since 1980 you're a lost case... still there are other orgers who appreciate good music.. see also this thread http://www.prince.org/msg/8/167440 Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. I just got the album today, and I'm diggin it so far. Lots of cool jazz and contemporary (that I know will turn some fans off) but that's fine with me. After a few listens, the opening track and My Love Is On Fire are my current faves. This is definitely an album I'll have to let "marinate" for a few days in order to give an accurate review, but I like what I hear so far. This surpasses "Conversation Piece" in my opinion. Easily his best work released since "Musiquarium." Is it worth the 10 year wait? I'll get back to you on that one... Michael never stopped!

Well, the disc has been out for a month now... I'm happy that everyone came here and voiced their opinion, good or bad. But, since it's been a month, alas, it is time to remove the sticky.
Thanks again for all your input, it made for a very interesting thread. |
