Problems with EWF post-FACES. bland songwriting and lack of afro-Caribbean jazz.

RAISE-album :

- BE MY LOVE / WANNA BE WITH YOU - bland songwriting ?

PFJ: yeah pretty much the highlight of the album but what happens after that? zzz ahhhh "Changing Times" really rocked!

- KALIMBA STORY - The very afro-Caribbean instrumental , used as intro forvthe group to enter the stage on the Worldwide RAISE-Tour
- EVOLUTION ORANGE - fierce breaks with horns and rhythm section which clearly are influenced by jazz

PFJ: quick teases both of 'em left me extremely frustratedthey didn't follow thru and stretch, but yeah the concert intro with the hawk swooping down was cool

All these problems show up on ILLUMINATION and even though it's a good record it still bores me. Kinda like MUSICOLOGY.
I've seen DEVOTED SPIRITS*1 and like them much much more (I got their cd somwehere around here) , so I'm keeping an eye out for their LA gigs. I also want to see Al McKay's group. Somehow, I keep missing them.

*1- Surprised that you didn't get bored with the mechanical drums on the DEVOTED SPIRITS ... especially on the mighty FACES-track .

I have big admiration for LARRY DUNN .
Amazing stuff he did for CALDERA , RONNIE LAWS , STANLEY TURRENTINE , etc.

A missed opportunity that they didn't use SONNY EMORY or another live drummer .

Problems with EWF post-POWERLIGHT too much techno in post-production tend to be lacking in soul plus only a single guitar and rap guest spots.

And dont forget these :

- YOU AND I
- SPEND THE NIGHT.

but I did, disbelief

hence the afore-mentioned problem

I have a magazine-interview with LARRY DUNN in which he explains that they used to wave with blankets for the sound of the hawk . After having sampled that , he lowered the sound to the right wing-sound . It appears that this was a last minute solution , because during the tour there were some technical sounding problems .

LARRY has this significant & typical keyboard/synthsound which you can hear on the artists i mentioned above .
Lately he contributed with the HIDDEN BEACH ALL STARS ( from the record label of current acts like JILL SCOTT and KINDRED THE FAMILY SOUL ) .
LARRY lays this sound of his in the solo of a JUICY FRUIT-remake ( MTUME ) ... worth to listen to .

To be honest, I still haven't played that cd. It's sealed in a bag somewhere. (LOL I bought it at the same time as that George Clinton mess-terpiece*). My references were really to a live performance at the NAMM convention in
January.

* not a typo...we'll bash that on another thread.

Yeah I'm a big Larry Dunn fan. As far as I'm concerned, he's as intrinsic to EWF as Al & Johnny.
