Not who's better, but which version of Voodoo childe do you tend to like more?

As a guitarist and multi-instrument player, this may seem like pissing on the holy grail; but I like Vaughn's version a little more. I'll explain:


Listen to both versions before you start posting and typing hateful things. You can feel a certain "passion" with Stevie. Pay attention to the way he kinda growls the words and then lays into number one (his guitar) like there is no tomorrow.

Man, as much as I love Stevie, there's no comparison. Jimi's record was a listening experience; Stevie's version is a well-played homage/cover. There was something spooky about Jimi's version. I would listen to it at night with the lights off, 'cause it evoked a certain mood. When I listen to SVR's version, I nod my head and go, "cool cover".

I'm sure Stevie would agree.

This thread should get interesting I think.

Jimi wins hands down. Stevie Ray was cool and I give him credit for taking the song and giving it CLOSE to the same excitement, but this was always Jimi's tune. Not to sound racist, but a lot of white guitar players I know seem to love Stevie Ray's version and don't like Jimi's. I could never figure that one out.

He understood the song and tightened it up all the way around. I'm sure others feel the same about other artists cover. I also have seen Stevie pull it off live at least 10x so I know it more than just the studio version.
Regardless, anytime I hear the intro it's genius. That's spooky.

Stevie's cool but I think JesseDezz has said it best so far.

The question with a cover will always be has the coverer added something or given a unique spin to the original.
Although done well, I think the answer in this case is no.

Jimi WAS the voodoo child. Voodoo Child (slight return) is so loose, so funky, so spooky, so mystic. None of the covers I have heard capture that mood. They usually turn the tune into lead guitar tour de force. That said,SRV was really able to recreate Jimi so convincingly that it is almost EERIE.
