great album! i like the san quentin one too, but i'm more drawn to the folsom prison album. he's way more "on" in that album, and way more of a bad-ass.

[Edited 10/16/05 16:36pm] Which greatest hits is that? Do you mean the 'Life In Death' CD? (Which btw, was released because of me, but that's a long story.) Or is there another comp floating around of only her solo stuff?

[Edited 10/16/05 16:36pm] i checked out her site and tried to download some of her songs, but the files weren't mp3 and i couldn't open them. ah well. i'd like to hear her version of 'gloomy sunday'. i love that song - diamanda has a gorgeous version, as does sinead. one day i'm going to compile all my favorite versions of that song on one CD...that'll be a real party-ender. Gitane is multi-faceted. Her solo albums are where she experiments more with jazz. 'Am I Wrong?' is in my opinion the best one to get. She also recorded a fetish album with Mark Ickx of A Split Second under the name Demonix. The only comp I know of is the one of her Christian Death tracks called 'Life In Death' which has "Gloomy Sunday" and Hendrix's "1983" on it, but is more goth-oriented naturally and might not be what you are looking for if you want the jazz stuff.

Here's the story (can you tell, I'm dying to tell it? lol). Over ten years ago I made a cassette of all the Gitane Christian Death tracks, created some home-made artwork, christened it 'Life In Death' and passed copies around to some of my friends (I used to make a lot of cassette comps and pass them around back then). One of my friends who got a copy is a prominent NYC goth DJ and has numerous connections (including Gitane). When Gitane and Rozz toured together back in the mid 90s, he arranged to have them stay with him when the tour passed through NYC. Before they left for the next city, my friend gave my cassette to Gitane and she thought the idea was so great, she took it to her label (I don't think it's on Cleopatra) and had the comp pressed for real and kept the name I came up with for it. The track order was rearranged and two new live tracks that I didn't have were added in place of two others that featured Valor's voice a little too prominently (Gitane hated him at the time), but it's pretty much the same thing. The only problem I have with this entire story is that when my friend gave Gitane my tape, he took all the credit, that bum. But that's okay, we're still friends today.
