Billie Holiday - The Ultimate 'Strange Fruit' Per4mance(Warning: Graphic DEATH* Pic) http://www.ladyday.net/watc/sf.asf
This per4mance is hair-raising Southern trees bear strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant south, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop [*added "death" to the topic heading. sos]

Thank you so much. I've never seen this performance.
This is truly one of the most touching songs I've ever heard. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

I've seen this clip from someone who I know. She's a HUGE Billie fan as well. "Strange Fruit" is one of my top songs ever by anyone. I have often wondered why u had never ran a thread on this song. I had wanted to, but everytime I start to, I would think, "Nah..I'll wait." Cuz I knew u were a fan. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Thank you so much for posting this, it illuminates a major form of terrorism that has long been glossed over. Very poignant performance, chilling delivery and timeless lyrics. Amazing to think that all of this was going on not very long ago, though some people tend to make it seem like it happened eons ago. Billie Holiday had a voice for the ages. It just saddens me that so many singers in the present day do not have that type of awareness. BTW, thanx for posting that photo. Imagery is an effective tool in bringing a point home. You know they used pictures like that for postcards during that time period. I ran across a site that had a story about that, just can't remember it.

Imagery is indeed an effective tool. No doubt the picture is disturbing, enraging, revolting, haunting...all of these things. So is the legacy of slavery and racism, which is all too often swept not-so-neatly under the rug. The Normal Whores Club

This song has haunted me since I first heard it but seeing her in this performance has given me spirit bumps. Thank you Harle ~ I'm going to pass it on to a friend who loves her. Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife. --Kahlil Gibran

That's what the song's about. Wow you people are too much. NO SH*T that's what the song is about. But damn, let the song paint it's own picture. No need to include your own GRAPHIC art. AFRICAN AMERICANS HERE IN THE U.S. DO NOT NEED TO SEE PICTURES OF LYNCHINGS IN 2005 TO KNOW THAT THEY HAPPENED. We have a collective and vast understanding of history and what we don't know we learn from our everyday experiences with racism that is still present in our country. Giving praise to Billie and her lyrics is one thing; but here in the United States; we really don't need your visual aids. Putting a "Warning" at the beginning of your post isn't enough; the picture should have never been posted in the first place. It ISN'T a direct link to the song. The picture ISN'T about the exact lynching which the song was written about; it's just there, for shock and awe, and to disturb people. Well you've succeeded. I'm very disturbed and I'm kinda shocked to see that Prince.org hasn't removed this pic several months later. [Edited 11/30/05 13:19pm] My name is Prince and I want your money

Another thing, who the hell are you to speak for ANYBODY? You should only speak for your own damn self and thats it (I'm myself an African American but I won't speak for them because guess what? History exist and will be this way till the ending of creation, whether they know about it or NOT). Its MY fuckin' choice to post whateva I want, graphic art, disturbing picture or anything else (as I long as I don't hurt nobody for that matter) and its YOUR choice to participate or just ignore it and put a sock in it. What's more disturbing is that those who don't understand aren't bothering to read either of your comments. the only strange thing is that apparently it's okay to post a picture of a murdered man, but not breasts or an ass. this is the wrong forum for this. shouldn't be sandwiched in between madonna and michael jackson inquiries, imho.
move it to GD with a link. [Edited 12/6/05 6:10am] you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

Indeed... that picture was DEFINITELY uncalled for...

And it really shouldn't be an issue WHAT is pictured... all that matters is that it's a disturbing image... end of story!

@ this thread. I'll agree that obviously the picture is graphic and perhaps unnecessary, but my goodness. Is name calling necessary by any of the adults in this conversation?

Harle...you're good chile.
There's no need for name calling at all. Most of the time when I see something posted about this song, there is always a pic just to make the message of the song even greater. I don't have an issue with the pic because of the context of the thread AND Harle is a positive chick.
