What the hell is a Super Audio CD?

A few weeks ago I was burned really bad with one of my purchases. I bought the "Footloose" soundtrack and was really looking forward to it because it also included the 12 Inch version of "Dancing In The Sheets" by Shalamar as well as some other bonus tracks that were not on the original album.

Anyway, when I got the CD home, the damn thing wouldn't play in any of my CD players. Then I started reading the CD more closely. I had seen the words "Super Audio CD" printed on it when I bought it but I just thought that meant maybe it had been remastered for better sound. When it wouldn't play, I noticed the words "Only compatable in Super Audio CD players". Then, I put it in my DVD player and got nothing. The damn thing wouldn't even play in the computer!

I didn't even bother going back to the store for a refund because I know from experience that they do not give refunds and will only exchange a defective CD for the exact same CD only. I just got mad as hell and threw the damn thing away.

What the hell is a Super Audio CD or even a Super Audio CD player for that matter? Also, these discs look just like ordinary CDs so they need to keep them in a seperate section in the record store.

They never gave refunds. Way back in the early 1980s after I exchanged what I thought to be a scratched 45 of "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind, and Fire three times, I was told that they don't give refunds because people can record the record and then return it. After three times though, they exchanged that 45 for one of my choice by another artist.....(only because they knew me and I was one of their best customers so they knew I wasn't lying). In today's modern era of CD burners, I really can't blame them for watching their back.

I knew I couldn't exchange it for a regular copy of "Footloose" because that was the only copy they had in the store. I had seen it in the store about a year ago and they never had another one until a few weeks ago. They could order it for me but it would probably be the original album without the bonus tracks (the reason I bought it) so I didn't bother.

It wouldn't play in my computer. However, my computer is an old computer that my mother gave me when she got her another one. Hell, it's Windows 98. lol

You need an entirely new player for SACDs. They're higher end audio that is similar to DVD audio. They haven't really taken off.

I be damned if when you finally get totally up to date with one musical format, they go and come out with a new one. lol

there are some SACD's (hybrids) that can be played in both types of players. they have one layer for regular and one layer that's super-audio.

you probably could have taken it back and explained to them your mistake. they probably would have exchanged it for the regular version. and maybe a little something else for the extra price of SACD.

But I thought sacd's would play on a dvd player.
Maybe not all dvd's play them.
Most sacd's are hybrids tho' but I guess those who aren't
u need to have surround 5.1 sound then.
I never really understood the difference between sacd & dvd audios
tho'.

I sure don't know what a Super Audio CD is. I keep seeing these ancient albums being remastered as hybrid regular CD and super audio on the other side.

What's the point if the original music wasn't created to ever be mixed separately into 8 channels?

it's a higher quality remaster, basically, than regular CD technology allows. it's not so much about the seperate channels, but the limitations of regular CD's and players vs. SACD's/players.

Here's what I do to beat the system. If I want to return an opened new CD (like let's say it sucks or what happened in your case), I tell them it skips. They will not usually offer a refund, as you know, so ask for a duplicate. When they give you the new one, DO NOT OPEN IT. Instead, wait a while and take it back (and if you can take it back to a different location of the same store, all the better). Tell them you got it as a gift and already have it, show them it is still sealed, and ask if you can exchange it for "something else."

I have also wondered what SACD was, and so I am glad I can learn from your mistake. I hope my advice helps...

Today there are SACD players, DVD-Audio players and Universal players (which can accommodate both formats).

to CinisterCee:
The object of the multi-channel capabilities of SACD are "to faithfully reproduce the precise acoustic signature of the performance space" along with storage capacity for text and images, disc variations, etc.

The main thing to be aware of, as Tessa mentioned, is to be sure any SACD you purchase is of the HYBRID variety...

...if your playback device is a standard CD player.

You mean the same acoustic performance space lost when it was originally mixed to 2 channels? smile

redface Probably bigger and that was certainly a sub-MIT explanation.

You know, I basically come here to get away from work. disbelief
