Z Cult Favorite - Duran Duran/Notorious

From their 1986 album, this song is hittin'! Produced by Nile Rodgers (of course), you can't go wrong with this cut at all. I always dug Duran cuz they sounded like Chic, Roxy Music and Bowie. But when they hit with this, all of that was confirmed. The groove is STOOPID. Who else out there can get with "Notorious"?

I like Chic and Duran Duran but don't care for this cut really. And it always reminds me of that gawd awful Puff Daddy usage.

One of my favorite DD singles! Nile had some not so great 80s work (Like a Virgin) and great ones like this.

Those of us that were around in the 80s knew of the Duran Duran single before Pump Buddy sampled it. razz

Did you just say Like A Virgin was some of Nile's not-so-great work? confuse

I did. sad I liked it at the time, but I think it's not aged very well at all. Nothing about it stands out to me anymore.

I liked Duran Duran up until the Arcadia/Power Station split in 1985. Then they weren't really on my radar again until "Come Undone" in `93.

I thought the same thing when I saw Rip's post, but then I thought that the material does sound dated. As opposed to Nile's work on Bowie's "Let's Dance" album. Now, THAT shit is bangin'!

nod As much as Let's Dance seems to mark the commercialization of David Bowie's discography - that shit is bangin!

Yeah, it is. Obviously, it was a different sound for him but for somebody like me that loved pop radio of the time it was great music.

Good pick Brutha B. Nile's magic touch is all over this cut. I know John Taylor (Duran-bass) enjoyed playing with Nile. He's a huge Bernard Edwards fan. DD could get down when they had to.

Hey my brother! I've always dug Duran, from Planet Earth onwards. And yeah, John WORSHIPS Bernard. It's his reason for playing bass.

mad Yeah that right! j/k! biggrin

As much as I was into them back then, after Notorious, I had to go on a sabbatical for a few years. They came back strong in the early 90's with Ordinary World and Come Undone. It's pure bliss now that the original 5 are back together with their latest Astronaut. Dang it's a year old already.

Notorious as a whole album is my 2nd or 3rd fave of theirs. I've always loved Nile Rodgers touch on their songs.

The ENTIRE Notorious album is BRILLIANT. So Misled, American Science, SKIN TRADE, VERTIGO drool . Great tour with the horn section.

disbelief Big Thing was and still is an amazing album. I put it up there with Prince albums, creatively. Liberty, I know a lot of Duran fans hate, but it's one of my favorite duran albums. It's just so intricate and ahead of it's time, imo. In comparison, The Wedding Album sounds washed down. I LOVE Come Undone and Love Voodoo, but most of that album sounds watered down to me. Especially the last few tracks.
shrug

Even though 7 and the Ragged Tiger came out at the height of their popularity and I LOVE Union of the Snake, New Moon on Monday and Tiger Tiger. The rest of the album doesn't hold up. Great memories, but the music sounds stale now. The Nile Rodgers single remix of The Reflex is the bomb. I think it's really too bad that 7 and the Ragged Tiger and The Wedding Album are their commericial high points... My favorite Duran albums lie in between those eras, including the Arcadia album. Their debut stands the test of time as well.

My Goodness, I've gone way off topic...

I liked 7 and the Ragged Tiger as well, but on a whole, it didn't feel complete. I've skipped a track or two cuz it didn't flow well to me. I almost lost it when I heard Tiger Tiger live, and the 7th Stanger is a great underrated track IMO.

I love "I Don't Want Your Love" , but I couldn't bring myself to buy Big Thing, and Liberty...sorry!

"Notorious" is a bad jam. I never paid for a Duran Duran CD before this one. But I really like a few of their earlier jams. I guess "Notorious", "Skin Trade" , and "Meet El Presidente" on the same CD, just did it for me.

it's shocking that no one has mentioned the live version (from 93, i think) of Notorious where Simon sings "you sexy motherfucker" in the middle of the song and they do a funky little break down.

but to stay on topic, i love this song and always have. Though I prefer the 12" version (because that intro where the sound goes back and forth thru the speakers rocks my world).

and to go off topic, Skin Trade is the jam off that album for me (though I like the majority of it)
