Fiona Apple on Letterman last night 10/11

Fiona Apple performed 'O Sailor from her latest release Extraordinary Machine last night on Letterman and did a damn fine job. As always I'm blown away by her passionate/soulful vocals and her bluesy piano stylings. The thing that's so interesting is she has more soul and blues in her music the many of the artists that are currently defining the neo-soul genre. Most importantly she knows how to sing and evoke emotion without trying to engaging in vocal gymnastics. It's obvious she learned well from two of her influences Bessie Smith and Aretha Franklin. Her interview with Letterman was cool too. I love how she didn't have any great explanation for where she's been the last six years.

Fiona does bang on the piano in a simular way to how Prince does. I love that low end piano, instead of that twinkly way of playing the upper register. Mood music is great.

I don't really pay attention to her music, but she is a Grade-A nutjob. But, on the plus side, she will take a hard spanking. biggrin

Doubtful. "Criminal" was an interesting lyric, but I haven't heard anything else from her that piqued my interest. I'm usually pretty demanding of music; it has to say something that I feel is insightful and doesn't enable unhealthy thinking (which doesn't leave a lot lol).

She actually has a great deal to say, much of it is thought provoking, eloquent, and honestly expressed. It is not all "unhealthy thinking" concepts as you put it. I would highly recommend you listening to one of her albums in its entirety before jumping to assumptions. It's funny how labels like that just stick to people and when you pull some of their albums you would be surprised at the many aspects they explore in their lyricism. I get peeved when people think Prince is all about sex when in reality that is a very small segment of his music. I think Fiona Apple is currently fighting against the similar type labeling.

You're misreading my post. I didn't say that I think her work enables unhealthy thinking (I'm actually familiar with very little of it), but that I look for music that doesn't do that. I have yet to be convinced that she has anything to say that's worth my time.

If you look at his entire body of work, it is actually a very large segment of what his music is about.

I've been playing "O Sailor" like crazy since I got the cd. I love that song. Her performance was alright. I don't like judging based on talk show performances, because many times they don't really bring their all compared to seeing them live.

Agree to disagree on Fiona. Why are you commenting negatively on something you admittedly know nothing about? In regards to Prince, I think thats a surface level assumption on his work.

I would disagree with someone who said Prince's work is entirely about sex; it's not. But to say that "that is a very small segment of his music" is like saying there's a little bit of lettuce in a caesar salad.

Nah, Fiona is the real deal. Of course, it's a matter of taste. Alicia is fine as hell, though. So she gets brownie points just for that.

lol I love Aretha....I didn't mean it that way. I mean rather than belting it out. I used Aretha because whenever someone can sing they always use her as a reference.
