Soulive Rocks, Shocks and Awes the HOB in L.A.

Last January when Soulive played in L.A., outside of them tearing the house down, the extra treats were special guests Ivan Neville & Chaka Khan. So you wouldn't expect them to be able to outdo that show. Right?

WRONG!

But before I go into that, a few words about the opening act...

...Ledisi.

Never heard of this woman before but i'll now never forget her.
An amazing vocalist, energetic performer and a down to earth sister. I'd done some research on her prior to the show and was especially looking forward to hearing her keyboardist and production partner Sundra Manning. Curtain rises and there's no keyboards. Instead the band consisted of drums, 3 background singers (1 male & 2 females) and 2 six-string bassists. One bass player's sound alternated between rhythm & lead guitar along with an occasional Hammond B3 sound. The other player held down the traditional bass parts.

Now I would be doing the brothers a disservice (and robbing myself of the opportunity to relive the fantasy) if I did not describe one the female singers. This was one fine thick sister! love Talk about painted-on-jeans. They had to be in serious pain just trying to contain that body. If I hadn't taken my teenage son with me, i'd have given that woman all my money just to let me lay my head in her lap. drooling
I hope somebody took some pictures. pray

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, the Soulive concert.

Anyway onto Soulive's set. The addition of 2 horn players to the band (trumpet & sax) has given the group and added dimension.
These guys were already funky and the horn parts are the icing on the cake.
They played a strong set as usual, mixing older material, tunes from the new CD...

...Breakout (a few tunes featuring Maktub's Reggie Watts).
Along with a few well chosen covers (It's Your Thing with Ledisi and Tighten Up showcasing the horns).

I was talking with the band in the dressing room right before their set and drummer Alan Evans told me, "We've got a few surprises."
My assumption was that he was referring to a few new tunes or arrangements. I wasn't even close. disbelief

For their encore, they came back and fired up Jesus Children of America. No big surprise there since i've heard them do this tune before. However I noticed the stage crew were being instructed to clear the floor around the vocal microphone. Oh I get it, there gonna bring Reggie Watts or Ledisi back out to sing the tune. They normally do this song as an instrumental.

Have guessed what's about to happen here yet?

Next thing I know...

...Stevie Wonder is being led to the microphone!!!

I thought the building was about to collapse. The place went nuts.
He started out playing harmonica and then sang a few verses. Ad-libbed a few things, got some audience participation going.
All the while the joint's going crazy. nuts

The folks that paid 20 bucks for this show got their money's worth and then some.

All I can really say is SOULIVE continues to be one of the best bands around. I'm always hittin' their So Cal shows and they got me hip to a new artist...Ledisi (does that mean "fine thik sistas and 2 6string basses" in some language?).

Ha...lemme take the wife & kids out for dim-sum.

Oh yeah Soulive tapes Carson Daly as houseband starting Tuesday.
