Songwriters Hall Of Fame: UPDATED! (Stevie, Michael &...Barry?) Yes! BARRY!

I thought y'all would find this interesting. Altho Garth Brooks has written his fair share of hits, I don't believe he should b honored at this time in his career, it's 2 soon. Stevie, on the other hand, should have gotten this a long time ago!!!

Special mention on Michael Jackson and Barry Manilow getting inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. I think it's great! Does anyone here know what Prince's status in this organization?

Here's the article:

"Brooks, Wonder to Get Awards
Thu Apr 4, 6:33 AM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - Garth Brooks and Stevie Wonder will receive special awards from the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the induction and awards ceremony on June 13.

Wonder will receive a lifetime achievement award. Brooks will be honored with the Hitmaker Award. The event will be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers.

"I am both pleased and proud to announce Garth Brooks and Stevie Wonder as the recipients of this year's special Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards," Hal David, chairman of The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame, said Tuesday.

"Each has contributed mightily to the creative and artistic community, having achieved unprecedented milestones. They have raised the standard of music-making to a new level."

This year's inductees include Barry Manilow, Michael Jackson, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, Randy Newman and Sting."

-sidenote: Where's my induction?!?

Jackson, Manilow Get Songwriter Honor

Thu Jun 13, 2:47 PM ET
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Jackson, inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has been honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame as well.

Jackson, who wrote hits such as "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal," was among those to be inducted in the Songwriters Hall on Thursday night. Others include Barry Manilow, Sting, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, and Randy Newman.

Garth Brooks was to receive the Hitmaker award, and Stevie Wonder, already a member of the hall, was to get the lifetime achievement award. Another hall member, Carole King, was also being honored.

Newman's induction comes three months after he won his first Oscar — after 15 previous nominations — for best song, for the duet "If I Didn't Have You" from "Monsters, Inc." Other movies for which he has written songs and scores include "Toy Story," "The Natural" and "Avalon."

Sting's "Until," from "The Emperor's New Groove," also had been nominated for an Oscar this year. The Grammy-winning rock star's songwriting credits include "Every Breath You Take" and "Roxanne," by his former group, the Police; and solo hits including "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You."

The husband-and-wife team of Ashford and Simpson have had a few hits of their own but are better known for writing classics for Motown artists. Among their hits are "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "You're All I Need To Get By" and "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand."

One of Manilow's biggest hits was "I Write the Songs," which, ironically, he didn't write. But he did co-write some of his most successful songs, including "Could It Be Magic," "Even Now" and "Copacabana (At the Copa)."

Jackson, one of the best-selling artists ever, was inducted into the Rock Hall as a solo artist and as a member of The Jackson Five. Although he has written a few songs for other artists, such as Diana Ross' "Muscles," most of the hits he's penned have been for himself.

Performers slated to help honor the inductees at the Sheraton Hotel on Thursday night were Brooks' girlfriend, Trisha Yearwood; Brian McKnight; Rufus Wainwright; and jazz singer Jane Monheit.

"It's incredibly exciting for me because the people who are being honored are people who I was listening to when I was growing up," said Monheit.

The show will be taped for broadcast on the Bravo network Oct. 7.

I just don't see the importance of awards.
Who are the people behind this 'songwriters hall of fame'. Who funds them?

There are more awards than you can shake a stick at these days, and as each day goes by, they become more and more irrelevant. Their only purpose seems to be marketing & money-making.

Not to take anything away from the artists nominated or whatever...but you've gotta ask yourself what the motives are behind the people that give these awards out. Wouldn't surprise me if they were funded by the industry itself (like everything else) as a tool to sell more product.

I just can't believe they inducted the "adult" MJ in the Rock Hall of fame??

he is the FIRST artist to be inducted where 90% or more of his adult career is Lip Synced!!

* hey as a kid he sang live allot and almost everywhere.. BUT this guy is not a musican..anymore or since 1977

and inducting him.. opens the door to allot more people even worst in the future..

can you say Britney Spears and others.

shouldn't you have to sing live somewhere or most of the time to get into The Hall????

Sure locarts MJ's latest music is crap and he's a characture of his former self (I personally love the stuff he did in the 70s and 80s before he lost the plot)....but he deserves to be in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame IMO because he has written some pretty cool tunes with his brothers and as a solo artist(eg. Don't Stop..., Billie Jean etc). Whats this shit about him not singing live as an adult, I am a child of the 80s and I seen everyone from Parliament to MJ live in concert....sure most of the HIStory concert was lip-syncing but he sang live during The Destiny, Triumph, Victory tours with his brothers and the BAD tour...before he went all freaky he was a brilliant song and dance man and there is NOTHING wrong with that! and even though he doesn't play musical instruments on stage why criticise him for that (alot of legends from Frank Sinatra, Elvis to Tina Turner don't write their own songs etc too and I don't see anyone here criscising them!). Even though I'm a hardcore Prince fan (though I think for most part of the 90s he made rubbish) and IMO P would wipe the floor with MJ or any other performers today (eg from Usher to D'angelo) I still appreciate the contribution MJ has made to music. Both he and Prince in their own way opened the door for alot of performers.

2 those who can't read:

It's the SONGWRITER'S HALL OF FAME.

It's NOT the SINGER's Hall of Fame!!!!

Fact is, he's written some killer songs!

Fact is, even if it was a Singer's hall of fame, Mike can sing the shit out of a song when he wants 2.

HOW DID YOU REACH THIS 90% FIGURE? Once again you have no idea what you are talking about!

It's been pointed out, but this is "SONGWRITER" not singers/vocalists (who are indeed musicians!)
We'll see what else becomes of MS Spears and her peerss, ok?

This is not an exclusive competition like BEST RECORD? It's for a lifetime achievement. It seems to be based on YEARS in the craft as opposed to volume or depth. Look at the list of inductees and all have been in the business longer than Prince (Sting's probably been at it as long, though)

I know this.. I just wanted bring a point of the rock hall award.. INSTEAD of starting a whole new topic..

I put it under "MJ and awards"..

this topics was dead.. so why start yet another topic which would have hve 6 replies??

put it under one..

I can name on ONE HAND all MJ's LIVE performances in 20 years.. ( I don't count doing a "live track" in the studio THEN lip sync it in front of a audience OR turning my mic on at the very end of a lip sync performance and say " I love you" OR hit the last few notes..)

YOU have NO clue how things work in this business.. so just sit back and be "amazed"..

what a moron rolleyes

It's very telling that Sting is in before Prince. Prince can write circles arounding the mundane Sting. These hall of fame awards are all hogwash, based on who knows who and who have you smoked crack with. Prince stay on the road you are...only exposes the posers for whom they are.
