Z Cult Favorite/Bowie/Queen - Under Pressure

Legend has it that Bowie, who was living in Switzerland, popped in one day on Queen who was recording in Montreux. They were just hanging out, when they all decided to cut something, just for fun. And this is what came out of it. "Under Pressure" from Queen's 1982 "Hot Space" album. Love this song to death. This is my Jr. High Theme Song. At the time, this song was EVERYWHERE. Great memories. It was a cool video as well. Great combo of Bowie and Mercury. Two pros with a killin' band in Queen. Anyways, who else out there digs this song?

i love this song. i discovered during that whole vanilla ice escapade when a radio station played the two songs back to back and my jaw just dropped. I didn't care much for vanilla ice ( i was more of an MC Hammer fan) but queen and david bowie blew my friggin pre teen mind!

Fine, I'll say it - I didn't know this song until Vanilla Ice sampled it ("ding DING ding ding d-d-ding ding"), but I've come to love it! Their vocal registers and range work amazingly well together.

I agree. This part is my favorite. The interplay between Bowie and Mercury is heartfelt. They BELIEVE these lyrics:

Mercury: Can't we give ourselves one more chance?
Can't we give love that one more chance?
Why can't we give love, give love, give love?

Bowie: Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care
For people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way
Of caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under Pressure

I think you and I feel the same way about samples - at worst, in most cases it's going to introduce you to a better song. If that's the case, sampling ain't all bad!

Did anyone hear Go Home Productions mash-up of "Under Pressure" with the MJ acapella from "Rock With You"? They made a video for it too.

It's one of the songs that never fails to make me either cry or totally scream live. Bowie's live versions with Gail Ann Dorsey and Annie Lennox are just as stirring and unbelievable. Try to track down video footage of the Bowie/Lennox rehearsal of this for the Mercury tribute. Good stuff. thumbs up!

You cannot go wrong with a Queen and Bowie collab. Under Pressure is such a great song and everything is on point. The piano, the vocals, drumming and of course THE BASSLINE, it's killer! Terribly funky. fro

Unfortunately, many people don't really think of Bowie when they hear this song. I guess for most it's a Queen song.
And yes, Gail Ann Dorsey really takes the song home!
