Put it this way,(in popular music) there's more that can't than those that can.

There's only a few who do read music in the pop genre--Sting, Randy Newman, Zappa, & those who played in band/orchestra in high school.

Reading music doesn't help in pop music. Knowing the names of chords does help.

Stevie Ray Vaughn said he just plugged in and played. I've played for years with a limited ability to read or write music. You can't teach or learn how to play from the heart. The only draw back is when you reach a certain level in music, you need theory to take you beyond what you've learned on your own.

Actually, before Eddie Van Halen played guitar, he was a classical pianist, and quite an accomplished one at that. He does read music, and is certainly capable of writing it down, but I'm sure he just prefers not to. Most excellent musicians who have the ability to write it down simply choose not to.

I heard Dave Grohl say years ago that he couldn't. This well into the Foo Figthers career. That's pretty surprising.

I'm not so sure about that.. Eddie's mentioned on numerous instances about taking piano lessons as a kid. I've yet to read any article or interveiw where it mentions that he reached any great level accomplished on the instrument. I've never read any interview (and I've read a bunch)where he has spoken about his music or his playing in any sort of theorectical terms.

I read where he described his playing as "falling down stairs and landing on his feet". He's also said that(I'll paraphrase) "There are only 12 notes in the western scale, how you use them is up to you". Not the kind of thing you'd expect to hear from a cat with a deep understanding of music theory.

I think the guys has/had a tremendous amount of natural talent, with a great pair of ears who's was just winging it for the most part.

Now if you'd said Tony MacAlpine...he's an accomplished classically trained pianist/keybordist and an absolute monster on guitar.

Eddie actually stated in an interview with Guitar World Magazine (where he was voted Guitarist of the Decade - the 80's) that he couldn't/didn't read music. As a poster stated earlier, he remarked in the interview that "there are 12 notes and whatever you do with those twelve notes is up to you". I remember it well because I thought to myself, "There's hope for me yet!".

Unless you're a frequent guest at the Van Halen household, how can you be "sure he just prefers not to"? There are many excellent musicians who don't have the ability to write it down, but are excellent musicians nonetheless.

LOL! Funny, Richie Kotzen and I used to go to the same school! We both had bands around that time and used to always practice in the band room. I remember him asking me one time if I heard the melody in my mind while instantaneously playing. I was really proud of him when he landed the lead guitarist for poison. But then I heard about the incident between them and I was like what a bad break!
