Rob Halford is back on tour with Judas Priest.

so anything is possible.

He didn't leave the group because he was gay. People knew even in the early 80s - before he came out - that he was gay. I remember hearing that as far back as 1983.

Rob left so he could come out... or at least that's what i've seen in interviews and what he has told me.

He formed Halford later and recorded and toured with his own band. It was hard for most Judas Priest fans to hear that Rob is gay.. THough i think most didn't like the replacement singer and are glad to see Rob come back.

Rob didn't even come out to himself until the mid to late 80's and left Judas Priest so he could be gay.

Indeed, it seems the 70's and 80's were a lot more homo friendly.

Hell yeah...the glam era! If you were a male singer in those days and weren't gay, you sure as hell had better look it if you wanted to sell records. Men were wearing make-up and dressing feminine and women were much stronger minded women that didn't take no shit off of men and many of them dressed like hookers to tease them. Pimps, gays, and hookers....my ultimate role models. lol

The good old days....where men were women and women were whores. lol

The 80's were not really gay friendly, and I doubt the 70s were any better. Fashion-wise, the looks were pretty gay, but gay issues and relationships were still very taboo. Plus there was alot of paranoia and speculation from the onset of HIV and AIDs.

In everyday life, those two decades were very homophobic. However, in the music world, the gay look was definately in but people didn't really notice it during those eras until they started looking back in the overly butch 1990s.

I think all those glam looking groups during those eras, whether meaning to or not, helped to loosen up some of the stuff shirt homophobia that was going on during the time and make homosexuality more acceptable in the 1990s. However, all the progress that has been made is trying to be reversed by a lot of the overly masculine hip hop artists that practically preach homophobia. By the way, men that try that hard to prove their masculinity usually have skeletons in their own closet. Also, throughout the 1990s, when homosexuality became somewhat mainstream, it lost a lot of it's mystery and glamor.

And them hair metal bands too in the 80's,

like rnb, rock seemed to of lost that mysique too.

And grandmaster camp, whoops i mean flash. Look at "the message" video. They still look like george clinton rejects from the 70's. lol Great stuff

Hell yeah. Groups like Motley Crue went much further than someone like Prince because, not only did they wear makeup, they also wore lipstick and had long hair that was teased just like women's hair. They looked like drag queens. lol

Hell, I loved it when Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five first came on the scene. They reminded me of an all black version of The Village People. One of them even had furs hanging from his shoulder when they performed on "Soul Train". Also, in the rap world, Afrika Bambaata had some sort of wild appearance. I can't remember but I think he dressed kinda like an Indian.

Anyway, in those days, it was all about fun and none of the fighting, shooting, and "trying to prove your manhood" bullshit like it is today.

falloff Dude you crack me up! But truth be told that seems to be so true. If you think about it, those artists are still remembered too. In pop, R&B and Heavy Metal. I'd like to see who we'll remember from this decade when it ends in 2010.

I guess you never heard of Elton John or KD Lang, huh? ONLY in Hip-Hop would it be devastating to an artists career if he came out. Women can get away with it much easier in all of music though.

I haven't heard and Elton John song in which he sings about affection for another man, directly. Had KD sung about women directly? I don't know her music

I don't think so. I think it would likely have more of a negative impact on a hip hop artists career, but it would others as well. Can you imagine if all of N-Sync came out? All the gay boys would be laughing and all the girls would be crying and burning their autographed bras.

The goofy thing about boybands is that even at this point it would be career suicide for a member to come out publicly. This is in spite of the fact that a lot of people already assume they're gay, and in fact, many boybands do play up a homoerotic element for the benefit of their gay fans -and girl fans such as myself who, unlike the teenies who are obsessed with the idea of marrying their favourite member, would much rather watch their fave boys knock boots with each other

razz

The unspoken boyband rule is apparently: Thou shalt be abnormaly touchy-feely with your bandmates to the point of suggesting the horizontal mambo takes place on a nightly basis, but thou shalt not actually do the horizontal mambo with them.

It's hard to say. Traditionally, anything considered unorthodox or "outsider" has caught on and been accepted more in the music world before it has in real life. Will it happen in the hip hop/r&b world? Time will tell, I guess. But I hope it's sooner rather than later. No doubt the music world's missing out on a lot of great artists -either because they're established as straight and can't fully express themselves, or they just don't get a chance because of their sexuality.

Fiddy's no musical or lyrical genius, but wouldn't it be interesting if one day the "bitches" he raps about weren't women?

Not that they have come out in their songs but EVERYONE knows their sexual orientation.
