Sinead O'Connor's new reggae album/tour I just read about Sinead's new album and tour this morning while I was reading the paper on the way to work...apparently her new album of reggae covers was released this week, and tickets for the Chicago dates of her tour go on sale tomorrow morning! Now, I love Sly and Robbie. I love what they did for Grace Jones back in the day. I'd love to hear what they do for Sinead. I'm thinking I need to rush out today and get the album, so I can decide if I wanna get tix tomorrow morning. Has anyone heard it yet? Like? Dislike?

Wow, this is the first I've heard about it. I love the idea, though.

Track listing, via amazon.com:
1. Jah Nuh Dead
2. Marcus Garvey 3. Door Peep 4. He Prayed - Sinéad O'Connor 5. Y Mas Gan 6. Curly Locks 7. Vampire - Sinéad O'Connor 8. Prophet Has Arise 9. Downpressor Man - Sinéad O'Connor 10. Throw Down Your Arms 11. Untold Stories - Sinéad O'Connor 12. War all of the customer reviews at amazon.com are gushing five star reviews...either it's THAT GOOD, or she's got a street team of fans plugging the album by writing positive reviews online. either way, i'm very interested. plus, a version of the song "vampire" was on her "collaborations" compilation released earlier this year, and it does indeed kick much ass.

I haven't heard the album yet, but she was playing live on the Late Late show (3 hour long Friday night chat show on Irish tv) with Sly & Robbie, and the rest of the band. They played 2 tracks. I can't remember what the first one was, but I have to say her voice was very subdued and didn't seem to fit the song. These ragga songs need to be sung with a lot of balls (if you know what I mean) and Sinead is normally up to that sort of challenge, but I don't think she did either herself or the song justice. The second track they played was Curly Locks, and again, she was too subdued. She whispered her way through the song, and seemed to go off key a number of times. Maybe she meant to do it like that, maybe she was just tired, but it actually shocked me, because it was the first time I've ever heard her sound like she was struggling to keep a tune.
Sly & Robbie, and the rest were good though. Really good. Having said all that, hopefully she'll be in fine voice when she tours, she did say (she was interviewed for about 15 mins as well) that the tour was going to fit in around the rest of her life, she'd be playing a few dates, coming home, and then off for another few dates every 3 weeks or so. She was, as usual, entertaining and weird. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I'm buying this today or tomorrow. She was hinting at a full on reggae album back in 2000. Faith & Courage had some hints of reggae on it, and I liked that. I'm cautiously optimistic on this.

me too. she lost me there for a while, but her "collaborations" anthology is one of my favorite releases of this year, and i'm back on the pro-sine-aid bandwagon.

I do wish she'd just get back to some kickass songwriting though...she's clearly got PLENTY to write about these days. Has anyone heard the B-sides/live thingee with the long title that I can't bother to look up right now? Trying to decide whether to buy...

Trying to decide whether to buy... i couldn't be bothered, though maybe it's a good collection, i dunno. it was supposed to bookmark her retirement, and we can all see how successful THAT was...i know someone who got it and liked it, but he also liked 'gospel oak' and her album of irish standards, both of which i really didn't enjoy at all.

I'm thinking I need to rush out today and get the album, so I can decide if I wanna get tix tomorrow morning. Has anyone heard it yet? Like? Dislike? From Now Magazine (Toronto weekly), rated 4 stars (out of 5): Sinéad O'Connor's fame stemmed from the fact that she was a killer cover artist. I mean, Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U was the breakthrough that shot the doe-eyed songstress to Pope-ragging, lesbian priestess heights. So while it's not a stretch for her to follow up an album of trad Irish folk covers with another disc of other people's work, the "WTF?" factor comes from her choice to cover classic reggae tunes. Here's the shocker: Throw Down Your Arms is actually really good. That's due in part to O'Connor's decision to work with masters Sly and Robbie at Kingston's Tuff Gong Studio. They deliver the perfect balance of skanky brass, spliff-soaked organ and heady, dubby bass lines. O'Connor's passionate vocal interpretations of the tunes – particularly two Lee Perry tracks, the fiery Vampire and the lover's rockin' Curly Locks – are wholly believable, and reimagine Rasta orthodoxy in a humanist, anti-misogynist framework.
Ooh, she was a honey, back in the day ![]()

She was a horrible live singer (from the TV clips I've seen), but I remember reading that she'd taken some vocal lessons since?

I downloaded it about a month ago and haven't really listened to it since. I really like Sinead and I LOVED her last album. I was excited to hear about her new direction but after listening to it I kinda felt cold. My first impression was that she didn't have much to add to the genre. I'll go listen to it again to see if I still feel the same way.

I agree- just go out and buy it as it has some gems on it- demos, alternative versions, cover versions and very rare recordings. As for the comments on her live...I went to see her at a small hall type venue and was blown away by the power in her voice- especially "Fire On Babylon"- the bit where she almost screams the word FIRE almost made me faint, it was that powerful- WOW. "There is no such thing in life as normal..."

I just got back from the Fetus, where I put Sinead's new album back on the shelf as I had 5 other things in hand. Had I seen this BEFORE, I would never have put it back! I see according to her site that she's coming to FIRST AVENUE Course, that's not on The Ave's calendar OR on ticketmaster yet, and as Anx said, she'd prolly cancel. But...if she's coming to town there is NO WAY I'll be able to pass up the show...

While I was searching about for hot pics of Her Craziness on the Web, I came across this message, dated June '03. Maybe it will tide you over: Hello Lovelies,
This is a message from sinead. This being a very special anniversary for me, I have chosen it to announce that as of July 2003 I shall be retiring from the music business. In order to pursue a different career. The last recordings I will make will be (believe it or not) a track for Dolly Parton's upcoming tribute album and a track for sharon Shannon's forthcoming album. These will be recorded in May. In July I will be releasing a DVD of a live show and documentary featuring tracks from way back along with tracks fom Sean Nos Nua. The DVD will be entitled "Goodnight, thankyou. You've been a lovely audience." And so ye have. I wish here to thank everyone who has been a fan and or supporter of mine over the last twenty two years in the music business (first record at 14, deal at 17. Half o first album wrote when 15). As well as all the people whom I have had the honour of working with. Not least the great Dolly Parton herself! Thanks to all of ye for a great time and a great education. I would request that as of July, since I seek no longer to be a "famous" person, and instead I wish to live a "normal" life, could people please afford me my privacy. By which I mean I would like not to have exploition of my self or my name or anyone connected with me by newspapers. I also mean that (with love) I want to be like any other person in the street and not have people say there is Sinead O'Connor. As I am a very shy person, believe it or not. So I ask with love, that I be left in peace and privacy by people who love my records too. And I hope it doesnt sound rude. It aint meant rude. I am glad that ye are helped by my songs. So help me too, by giving me what is best for me, a private life. My advise to anyone who ever admires a so called "celebrity" if u see them in the street, dont even look at them. If u love them, then the lovingest thing u can do to show them so is leave them alone and don't stare at them! Or bang on restauraunt windows when they in there. Or make them get their picture taken, or write their names on bits of paper. That's pieces of them. And one day they wake up with nothing left of themselves to give. Love, peace, and don't 4get to pray y'all. Sinead
