Music from the TV Show "What's Happening"

When Rerun is dancing and pop locking, some of these songs sound familiar and funky as hell. Does anyone know if these were ever actual songs or were they just music that the television series had specially made for the show? Some of them remind me of Billy Preston's "Outta Space".

Also, when Raj and Rerun move into an apartment together in a later season, there is song that is always playing in the background that reminds me of Teddy Pendergrass' "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose". I haven't seen that particular season in years.

this is Season Three, which was released on DVD a few months ago.I've been watching these episodes, but I gotta admit, this is the most disappointing season.

But yeah...in this season, they keep playing a funky instrumental that sounds like Teddy Pendergrass' "Get Up,Get Down,Get Funky,Get Loose".What's funny is,this song pops up EVERYTIME there is a dancing scene...lol...why can't they at least use a different song sometimes?

lol That's why I was wondering if they had someone to come in and make a song especially for the show so they wouldn't have to keep paying musical groups for borrowing songs to play in their show.

That's probably what happened. When I watch this show,I can tell that it was a very low-budget TV show. The sets look cheap. There's a rumor that,to save money, the producers used the "Sanford and Son" house for this show. You see the SAME extras everywhere...in the soda shop,in the classroom, etc. So it's likely that they didn't wanna spend alot of money to use different songs.

I remember when they came back in the mid 1980s and did the series, "What's Happening Now". It was very obvious that the set of Rob's Place was the exact same set as Mel's Diner on the show, "Alice". Also, they had run out of ideas for writing the show. They stole countless "Three's Company" episodes and wrote the same exact idea into their show.

I know this isn't what you're asking, but the theme is by Henry Mancini, isn't it? He's done some diverse stuff.

..Very interesting thread. From what I read online (w/ a interview w/ the great, late Fred Berry), They (the cast) didn't really have much input on the music selections. Henry Mancini had it on lock down. Supposedly they wanted P-Funk to do the "Bootleg episode" but the producers threw it to the Doobie's. The music used during the dance contest (Season 3) was so horrible and dated, but it's still fun to watch after all these years.

I only watched a bit of it. It's way before my time. I don't even remember seeing it in syndication.
