Duh!!! We are talking about the overall look of the group. Damm dude anyone can see the Rick was totally fucking obsessed with P by the mid 80's. Rick even started dressing like Prince in the Glow video.

Silly me. Talking about music differences when I should focus on superficial crap like costumery and make-up.

Okay, the music is most important but man shake....that Glow video was one of the saddest things I've seen in the career of what had been up until that time a relevent artist. To have gained the kind of success that Rick had doing his thing, only to be seen imho as wanting desperately TO BE a contemporary and competitor in that video was really really hard to watch. I know that many will disagree with me but as far as I am concerned Prince retired that brother.

I really can't place your reference as I faded out on Rick by the time of GLOW. He was already mired down in overly dramatic ballads and a lot less funk. Still, your last sentence really gets to the heart of my contention. Prince could back up any rivalry with Rick because he could outplay him on any instrument, as well as compose "hits". Matter-of-fact, Prince really put more punk in his funk than Rick ever managed. A lot of UPTOWN, CONTROVERSY and 1999 just bristles with "new wave" aesthetics.

He was more a lead singer solo artist than a bonafide bandleader. Rick essentially flashed in the funk pantheon for a brief period between PFunk & Prince. He might have made better strides post-STREET SONGS, if he had headed for Luther Vandross-type waters. Though, I guess, this is when the pipe came into Rick's life.

* - " RETIRED " question , " OUTPLAY " questionexclaimshake.... it's all 'bout the competition , right question
Why can't artists just be seen for what they are by themselves MUSICALLY , instead of the endless contest thang question exclaim zzz

In this case, because there was a very public open feud that ensued.
